u can put a stocking over the filter but it is not necessary in my opinion. I have two fluval filters in my tanks (one 105 and the other 205) the fry tend to swim away when they feel the suction and ALL of them survived when they were accidentally sucked in (rare case). You will find them swimming around in the foam compartment when you clean it. Guaranteed!!!!!

If you are really concerned with keeping all of the babies, then you will need to put a prefilter sponge over the intake. You are going to be having more fry than you know what to do with in the next few months, so I would say not to worry about it, since convict fry are virtually worthless, and you will be having spawn after spawn after spawn now that they have started.

Adding the stocking (or a foam sleeve) would be the safest, but in my experience raising convicts, this hasn't been a real problem for me. These will need to be cleaned more frequently, however, since they'll trap more debris.

I've raised black convicts through 5 generations.

I would put a stocking on the filter to be on the safe side.
