I mean, I've been trying to breed them for a while now. I keep putting the boy in the girl's aquarium, and he starts to build a bubble nest, but he never finishes. I put the lights on bright because I heard sunshine makes them more fertile. I put them in a 2 1/2 liter tank. No gravel. I've had several different pairs. Are the betta fish at pet stores to old to breed? Or too sick?

You need a 10 gal to breed them in, You must condtion the 2 breeding bettas, The male must make the nest first ( put the female in a jar or small tank inside the 10 gal, so he can see her but cant get to her, Then once the nest is made you can release her, Have lots of plants for the female to hide in,And the bettas do have to be the correct size as each other and the right age to breed, And how do you supose on raising a batch of betta fry with a 2.5 litre tank, They have no chance of life, You will need 1 x 55 gal tank and and 50-100 jars (for the males).

That was a short paragraph about breeding bettas from me but you need to research. Type 'breeding bettas' into www.google.com and you will get lots of sites.

RESEARCH BEFORE YOU TRY AGAIN,

Good luck

You need to do a lot more research before trying to breed your bettas.

First of all, you shouldn't just be putting one betta into the other's tank. 2.5 liters is only 0.66 gallons; the tank that your bettas spawn in must be at least 10 gallons, which is about 38 liters.

Sunshine does not make them more fertile, and your spawning tank should not have any gravel or substrate in it.

Before you even put them together, you need to have ready a microworm culture for your future fry, hundreds of jars to keep the fry in and a 150 liter tank to put the fry into when they have grown.

Please do research before breeding.

There's a lot more to spawning bettas than putting two fish together. You need to condition them with proper foods and keep them separated for a few weeks first. See the sections on breeding bettas and raising the fry in this link first: http://www.bettatalk.com/ There's a lot of preparation on your part that needs to be done before you're going to have a successful spawing.

Dirty water? Lack of nutritious foods,(try some live foods)?Get a 10 gallon tank and fill it about 1/3 full, add floating plants, keep the bottom clean with 50% water changes(with pre-treated water that's the same temperature as the tank),have a cover available(you won't need it until after the fry are 2 weeks old),get both fish in to spawning condition(when the female is in spawning condition you will see a small white tube in her vent),then when you have all these things right introduce her to the male(it sometimes helps to keep her near the males tank so he can see her), you should have a couple of good books on spawning Anabantidae at your disposal, cause ther's a lot more you need to know.

Did you condition them so they would be ready to breed? You are supposed to put the female in the males tank too...

EDIT: If you get a strong filter or bubble wand, the current will just destroy the bubble nest, you are better off with standing water.

Bettas would desire to be genuine conditioned to mate. in case you in basic terms throw them in a tank mutually, you will maximum possibly finally end up with one or the two fish ineffective or badly injured! that's a protracted, complicated technique. in the event that they're presented at basically the the appropriate option time, in basically the the appropriate option way in this technique, they'd mate. Or one fish would reject the different. in the event that they mate, the female would desire to be bumped off as quickly as they're completed, the male would change on her immediately. it somewhat isn't something to be undertaken except the breeders somewhat comprehend what they're doing.

its hard to breed Betta. everything in the tank has to be perfect. Water temp, pH, light, their moods. Just keep trying and maybe do some research

well the tank should have gravel and maybe a plant to make the fish feel more secure. and if he isnt finishing his bubble nests then try this. keep the fish separt. wait until he starts to build the nests and then put the female in. you can also try puting the fish by a window because sunlight has wats called UV rays that give the fish more energy than a regular light bulb. they also sell UV light bulbs at pet shops, but it can get a little expensive. or get a filter or bubble stick to move the water, this can also stimulate a more natural surounding were the fish may be more liable to mate.

fish are tricky but betta usually do not mate well unless the stars align perfectly (figure of speech not literal) they are "fighter fish" they usually try to attack other betta fish especially opposite sex lucky your fish are still alive lol
