I'm thinking of getting a 20 gallon salt water Nano tank. How much live sand, and live rock will I need. Also what kind of equipment will I need to keep this tank up and running.

I know all about cycling the tank before fish and all that good stuff.

Also, I don't want to over stock, so what kind of marine life should I have? Hermit crabs, star fish, golby's, clowns??

right now i have.
-1 silver shark (approx. 2 inches)
-1 black redtail shark (approx 1.5 inches)
-3 dwarf tiger barbs (about fully grown- 1-1.5 inches each)
-1 female dwarf guarami (approx. 1.5 inches)
-1 chinese algae eater (approx. 1.5-2 inches)
-1 ____ catfish(black w/white spots) (approx. 2 inches)

They all live hapily with each other it seems.the catfish doesnt swim around alot.ive never seen him eat but hes gotten alot bigger.is this a good mix?what else could i put in with them?what is the best kind of food to feed them?right now im feeding them complete flake food becase i ran out of blood worms.im wondering if there was something better than blood worms(i heard they were the best and the have the most protien).is there a difference between enamel coated rocks(like the blue/green/red ones)and the other gravel(smaller rocks/sandy type stuff.)?.i know its a big long question but im curious i want to give my fish the best environment i can:D all answers are appreciated :D

I resuced another betta today. Half dead in a filthy bowl at the lps. He's in clean water w/ some aquarium salt and a heating pad to help warm it up. Anything else I can do? He's now down at the bottom not looking so good. He looks a little skinny but he won't eat yet, other than that, his color looks pretty good considering. Any suggestions that might help him out a little more than I've done already?

I just couldn't leave him at the pet store, he was upside down in the bowl. I actually thought he was dead, but he moved. I don't really expect him to make it, but I'm gonna do my best to help him. So, if you have any helpful advice, other than ending his misery, I'm willing to give it a try. Thanks

i bought 2 goldfish about a month ago. an oranda and a ryukin. a few days later, the oranda developed sores or maybe cuts on his mouth. (i wonder if he cut himself on one of the plastic plants, he liked to chew them). they healed pretty quickly (a couple of days) but he lost part of his bottom lip from it and can't eat very well and spends a lot of time at the bottom of the aquarium. The ryukin never suffered any illness or injury and is very healthy. has this happened to anyone else out there, what else could have caused it, and how do i help my poor oranda? (2 fish, 20 gallon tank, weekly water changes, all numbers are good, no more plastic plants)

ramen noodle cups? would rinsing/cooking/cooling it make it safe for him to eat? also, how long is it safe to leave the light on in a one gallon triangle shaped tank.will the the top melt because its some sort of plastic? the top has a clear acrylic part to separate the air above the water from the lightbulb. above the light where it touches the outer layer, there is a piece of aluminum,im guessing to reflect on the water? im trying to keep the heat around 75-78 so my betta stays happy. this is my third betta. (one lived 3 years), and i want to make him happy, but he will not eat his food, (pebbles) he only grabs onto the pebble, swims around with it in his mouth, and spits it back out. so now to give him a little treat i want to try the pea also. i cant think of anything to help him feel a little homey because right now his tank is pretty bare its just light gravel with an air filter. no plants because the tank was used by my one other fish and i dont have a new fake plant to give.

he's a black moor, seemed healthy in the store and seems healthy now, just a little ditsy...any answers as to what may be wrong with him?

I have used a dechorinator in the water which also takes care of chloramine. It has sat for about two weeks in 2 sealed 5 gallon containers. It is for a 55 gallon tank. Can the water sit too long before being used? I am guessing no but I do not want to take the chance. Someone knowledgable in the area please help. Thank you

4 of neon tetras died last week. 1 has been fine and the other 1 disappeared and couldnt find it. I assumed it was dead. However I discovered it in the filter still alive after 2 weeks.
I have just removed it from the filter and placed it with the other fish. It seems ok as it is eating and swimming. However its body is covered in small white spots. What could this be and what can I do about it? All answers appreciated x

Yesterday I was feeding my fish zuccini and it was frozen so I put it in the microwave for a little bit. I fed them as usual and today some of them are on the bottom of the tank and not moving. They're kind of upside down too. Are they dead? Do I need to clean the tank so the others don't die?

We've had a 30l tropical biorb for a few months and our current stock of fish have been living happily together for a few weeks yet suddenly today some seem to be dying. We've lost one spotted mollie who seemed healthy yesterday and now 2 other littlies (not sure what they are called, they're orange with black tails) are just floating near the top looking like they're about to die too, Can I save them?

I have a 10 gallon tank which will soon be home to one small ruykin goldfish. To help with the mess from the goldfish i would like to know if i could get away with adding in a bottom feeder of some kind. I dont know if they live at the same temperature or coexist well. Any help on whether that would work and if so what kind of bottom feeder to get?

Thanks for the info on the water guys. Now I have a really dumb question lol. Most of my aquariums are like large fish bowls as I have betta's in them. So I simply do the water changes on schedule, and most of my betta's have lived well into 2-3 even 4 years this way.

But out of curiousity, how do you test water for ph levels? How do you know what to look for (how much of good/bad levels) are in your paticular tank? Do all fish respond bad to certain chemicals or do some chemicals (or ph levels...whatever you call it) affect some fish worse then others? Does someone with 2-5 gal. "fish bowls" need to still check the ph levels???? Thanks!

I have an INDOOR air conditioner...the type that rolls from room to room. I am constantly draining it, removing buckets of water every day or two. It's crystal clear water, just condensated on the coils and goes into a clean plastic drip pan. I know this is probably a tricky question...but would anyone know if condensated water is safe for fish tanks? I was thinking since it doesn't have any chemicals added like tap does that I have to treat all the time....that it would be better for the fish? Ideas???? Thanks :)

i've tried looking for sites on tropical fish diseases but i cant find the right one
the scales on the top left side of its head, normally light blue, have turned white and look as if they are peeling off. theres only a quite small patch, perhaps the size of half a pea, but i want to sort it before it gets worse.
i have suspicions that it is chilodonea, or something that sounds like that. can anyone help me? its only on one fish by the way, a tank i got in october with 2 leapoard danios, 4 golden barbs and 4 platies, which have been in there companionably for a few months now. my last fatality was when a danio swam into the filter during cleaning out time, unnoticed, completely unrelated to disease. can anyone help me on this topic, i desperately need an answer!
thanks!
1) what is it
2) hoow can I sort it
3)how fast do i need to sort it
