i've tried looking for sites on tropical fish diseases but i cant find the right one
the scales on the top left side of its head, normally light blue, have turned white and look as if they are peeling off. theres only a quite small patch, perhaps the size of half a pea, but i want to sort it before it gets worse.
i have suspicions that it is chilodonea, or something that sounds like that. can anyone help me? its only on one fish by the way, a tank i got in october with 2 leapoard danios, 4 golden barbs and 4 platies, which have been in there companionably for a few months now. my last fatality was when a danio swam into the filter during cleaning out time, unnoticed, completely unrelated to disease. can anyone help me on this topic, i desperately need an answer!
thanks!
1) what is it
2) hoow can I sort it
3)how fast do i need to sort it

What you are thinking of is Chilodonella, a parasite. That is a possibility. Look for really heavy breathing as another clue that this is the cause also, extreme lethargy, or just laying around the tank. If you see either of those signs, I would assume this to be the possible cause and treat with a good ich medication. While dangerous to fish, it responds very quickly to treatments and should clear up within 2 days.

If you don't see those additional signs, look for any sliminess or fuzziness around the area. If you see that, I would suggest that it is columnaris, a bacterial infection. This can be treated with any one of several readily available antibiotics such as Furanase, Furan-2 or Maracyn TC. Just treat as the package directs.

Bot of these can kill a fish fairly quickly, so prompt treatment is in order. They can also readily spread to other fish in the tank, so I would suggest treating the entire tank for either of them.

An obvious question which has solved a lot of white patch mysteries in the past is - Do you have a heater guard over your heater? If not it may well have burnt itself on it. If a fish is hiding behind the heater it will not move even if it is on and will burn itself. A heater guard will solve this problem for £2. The fish should heal itself eventually, but the colour is unlikely to reappear on the burnt patch. If your heater is already protected ignore this answer.

You can have the gruesome ick show on one fish, long before it attacks the others.

When was the last time you cleaned the tank? If the tank is really nasty/brackish, it will hurt your fish.

Barbs are okay with brackish water. Platies can only do so much. I suspect your tank is too green.

get some ick meds, clean about half the water. It should do the trick.
