4 of neon tetras died last week. 1 has been fine and the other 1 disappeared and couldnt find it. I assumed it was dead. However I discovered it in the filter still alive after 2 weeks.
I have just removed it from the filter and placed it with the other fish. It seems ok as it is eating and swimming. However its body is covered in small white spots. What could this be and what can I do about it? All answers appreciated x

the other fish did not die with white spots. maybe its stress of new tank that caused them to die?

your fish has white spot(ich)you need to get a treatment from your local aquatic shop, and you treat it on day one and day four, make sure you remove any carbon filters as the medication wont work.
you have to treat the whole tank as this lies dormant in the tank

does it look like it's been dusted with sugar? If so It's called white spot or ich it needs medication or all the fish will be in danger of getting it. Go to the local aquarium shop or Pets at Home if you have one. They will have what you need and the instructions are easy to follow. It's one of the most common fish diseases. the parasites live in the water and only attack weak or stressed fish new additions are always stressed from the transportation.

As for the earlier losses, There is also what is called New tank syndrome, There aren't enough bacteria in the filter and gravel, so the toxic levels are very unstable in a new tank and fish waste produces ammonia. As you put so many fish in at once the rise was too great for the filter to clear and enough to poison the less hardy fish like the neons. Wait at least another two or three weeks before replacing them as Neons should always be kept in groups of at least six. Don't add anything else to the tank either.
Sorry to say this but like most beginners you added too many too soon. Even in a 4ft well established tank I'd never add 15 fish at once.

Good luck with the others and Welcome to the crazy world of fish-keeping!!!

I dont no much about tropical fish.... but my brother ha d a tank for awhile and iv learnt abit.

First of all is the temperature correct for the fish you have in your tank, and are you using the correct cleaning agents/equipment?

Guppies arnt ment to have a long life spam, where as the tetras should of lastest abit longer then a week or 2. strange!

And i know that if 1 fish gets ill get it out of the tank straight away as the other fish will catch it quickly, move it to another tank of flush it sadly.

Good luck with your tank, i think tropical fish are beautiful

If the spots look like grains of sugar it's likely to be white spot. Get some anti-white spot treatment and put it in your tank. Remove your carbon filter and if you have an air stone increase the aeration.

If the spots look like they could be larger and cotton wool like, get an anti-fungal treatment. Put this in your tank remembering to remove carbon filter and increase aeration.

The stress is likely to have brought out the infection and could very well have caused you to lose the other fish. Treatment should help.

Did the dead ones have white spots too? Sounds like a condition known as "Ick". You need to go to your local pet store or the palce you them and get medication for it or all your fish will die from it. If all your fish die from it and you wish to get new fish to replace them, you will have to clean the tank thouroughly before you add new fish as the Ick will still be present in the water.

It is called "white spot" and its a fungus. You canget stuff from your local tropical shop to put in the water. Try Mollies next time , they are about the hardiest trops you can get. I had problems with other types when I first started, now I only have Mollies and Platys and have had them for nearly two years with no probs. Watch out though, they breed like mad !

They have got white spot disease which is caused by the sudden change in weather. When the weather has been cool then changes to a warm spell it will lower the temp from 75f to 65f and lowers the fishes resistance of health
