i have 3 pearly white fishes, one is a baby right now about half the size of his parents. The fish are pearly white and one has bright(but lightcolored) blue eyes(the color of the sky) with a very shiny opaline head(so does the baby)the other one has very bright red eyes. They have long pale(almost clear) colored tails. what kind are they and how do i tell them male from female? if you think you know what kind of fish i am talking about please tell me. Also please provide a link with a picture of the kind of fish. Also they are freshwater fish(they live in a pond in the back)Thanks.

they're heads are creamy white with a lilac tint. Also- HOW DO I TELL MALE FROM FEMALE? Does their eye color determine their sex.

From your description, they sound like glass painted tetras. Glass painted tetras are actually painted with chemicals, but the chemicals wash off very easily. The chemicals on your glass painted tetras (If they are glass painted tetras) are probably washed off.

Here's a link:

http://www.firsttankguide.net/painted.php

Scroll all the way to the bottom when you get to the page. The fish in a group are glass painted tetras. Read on if you desire.

Don't ever get a fish that has the word "painted" in it's name!
Painting is extremely cruel, and if you do have glass painted tetras, you have clearly made a mistake.

Hope that helped! Good luck!

P.S. If they are not glass painted tetras, they are most likely some sort of albino fish, or tetra.

It sounds like a Blue Skirt Tetra (also called Blueberry Tetras). Females will be much wider than males and have a stomach that protrudes from the sides. These fish are given special food as fry, this food is not good for the fish and the purchase of these fish should not be supported.

It should look like this, except blueish http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/characins2/a/whiteskirttetra.htm ...

A blue eyed fish? Red eyes I've heard of but never blue. Anyway, we have to hold off on determining sex until we have determined what species of fish you have. I would hope that the only fish you have in a pond is koi or goldfish as no other fish could live in a pond unless you lived in a tropical area where your water temp was a constant 72-82 degrees. With the pearly and opaline coloring you're describing, as well as the creamy color and lilac tint, this is also indicative of koi. And if any fish can have blue eyes, it would be a koi. Why, if you don't know what your fish is, are you so sure it isn't a koi? It sounds like koi to me. We really, really need a picture.

You can tell the males by watching them carefully over time.
The males will be the feisty one(s) that chase the other fish(es) around. They may occasionally nip at the tail fins of the other fish as they do the fish courtship thing.

You may be talking about Koi. Google Koi. If the tail and side fins are VERY long, you may have Butterfly Koi which would be a reall pleasant treat indeed!
If they are VERY shiny, you may have sequin koi! What luck!

Is this a trivia question or are you trying to find out what type of fish you have?

EDIT: Are they goldfish? I found a similar picture of what you were describing: http://image55.webshots.com/55/0/58/63/525105863HZwnWf_ph.jpg

You are talking about Koi fish. Koi males have longer fins and they are much bigger, female koi have smaller fins if you look on the top fin females will be shorter.
