Fish - January 2007

[Selected]: All categories Pets Fish

The fish are legally allowed to be imported (they arent on any banned list). But how do i actually go about the whole process?
I know i have to get a licence(but i dont know where from)
I know i need a health certificate (again - where from)
Would i take them to an airport? where would i pick them up from?

Any help would be appreciated. I'll be leaving from Houston Texas, and picking them up as close to South Wales as possible.

I added pure ammonia on Monday (Jan. 15) I have not seen any nitrites yet. I am also not seeding my tank. When will I start to see nitrites around?

It looks like hair, and it is stuck on the bottom of the tank, on the rocks. What is this from? Do I need to get rid of it?

This tank has never been stocked, I set it up, and let it cycle for weeks, and have been using the light as a night light. This is a fresh water tank, not saltwater.
Any ideas?

I bought four ghost shrimp about a month ago, and noticed that one had an odd green lump in his head. I thought nothing of it, and that shrimp seems to have grown the fastest, but now the lump has grown giant. It seems to consist of green eggs, and is INSIDE the body of the shrimp near the head. DOes anyone know what those are, and if they and harmful, what to do about it?

I want to know which kind of gravel is better for my freswater tank, rock(real gravel) or crystal rocks. Does the real gravel help keep the tank clean? Does the real gravel make the water dirty? I need a website to be shure.

I want to know how much time do you have to leave a tank after you set up so it can be ready for fish. I read about in a bunch of websites but they all said different things. I need a well known website to be shure.

My upside down catfish is breathing heavy and folds his body in half. He is in a 50 gal tank with other upside down cats, cory cats, and tetras. All water tests are within normal limits and all other fish are acting fine. One of the other upside down cats is breathing hard but not folding in half. Any ideas as to whats going on?

Recently I have sort of jumped into a fish aquarium without doing a proper amount of research first. In our tank we have two small african drawf frogs, 2 fancy guppies, two x-ray something fish, and two larger orange guys (Forgive my ignorance with actual names). The Mrs. wanted some neon tetras, so we added two to the tank. One died the next day. The other won't leave the bottom. So I added two more Neon Tetras hoping the original one would feel more comfortable with others of his own kind. Now all three just sit at the bottom, the new two swim around some, but not much. Our tank is typically 78-80 degrees, and we do use aquarium salt. The other fish seem to be fine, and healthy they all eat and swim around actively.

I'm not sure what we should do. I'm open to opinions?
Could the neon tetras be scared of the other larger fish in the tank (they are the smallest in the tank)?
If they have the dreaded neon tetra disease could they give this to other non-neon tetra fish in the tank?

I have a 55 gallon aquarium which I want to change into a marine/saltwater tank. I don't want to cut holes in it just in case I later use it as a freshwater again. Is there a way to do the plumbing by not actually changing the tank in any irrevesible way? Also, what kind of sump do I need for a 55 gallon tank? I can easily get a 10 gallon tank, but will that be enough? Also, what kind of filtration should I use?

We think the koi have something wrong with them and heard putting salt would help with their slime coats.. Is this true? The fish also seem to be "flipping" and "rubbing" themselves up against the rock in the tank and think that maybe they have a parasite that they are trying to rub off. does that make sense?

First of all, I have no idea how the first one got in there. Then before I knew it, there were a ton of them. We cleaned out the tank. And I mean cleaned out. (Moved fish into a reserved tank for the time being) Took everything out down to a few gallons of water and gravel. Put a ton of pickling salt in there to soak. (didn't have regular table salt) Washed the plants and soaked them in a bucket of salt water. Washed the water filter, everything. Then completely emptied the tank, put in new gravel, fresh water, and new filters. I just checked the filters and sure enough there were 4 snails on them. WHY??? What the heck can I do?? I hate those little suckers! Help! I don't want to move my fish back in there before riding the tank of them.

I have a 20 Long tank thats bean running for about two years. The problem that I am having is that my PH is always at 8.0 and I am trying to get it down to 7.0. I do not have any ammonia or nitrite problems I do not over feed my fish I clean the gravel with a gravel vac every mounth and do a 10% water change and I am using fake plants and an air pump with 6 inch air stone. The PH of my tap water is also at 8.0. I use water conditioners before I put the tap water into my tank and I also put in about two table spoons of aquarium salt. I am currently using API PH down but it does not lower my PH at all even with double doses what can I do to fix this problem.
