if the water smells bad its probably a build up of ammonia. You need to do a water change, not over 1/4 of the tank with a gravel vac and add carbon and ammonia remover rocks to your filter for at least 30 days, that should take care of it.

If you have not done a partial water change, DO NOT change more than 1/4 of the water in a 24 hour period. If you change too much, the fish will be dead in a matter of hours, due to the change in water chemistry... Ph is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many things at work like total dissolved solids, carbonate hardness, nitrate levels, and more. Do a 1/4 water change NOW and another tomorrow, vacuming the gravel if you can.

How long has the tank been set up? And did you cycle it? If the tank is not cycled then the smell is probably ammonia, if that's the case you need to do a partial water change ASAP.

Maybe you should do a partial water change. The smell might be that the tank water has many quantities of fish waste.
