To raise guppy fry quickly: If u hav a small tank(5.5), fill it w 2-4" of water from babys' home tank. Add a small submersible heater, a small SLOW airstone, a few pebbles or rocks here & there-no gravel, & a small plastic plant-let it just float....To force growth, feed your gups newly hatched brine shrimp 2-4 times/day.USE an eyedropper to collect the brine shrimp AND put them in fresh water before you feed them 2 your gups (you don't want alot of salt to get into the baby gup tank)...Occasionally, you should feed them baby livebearer food, or tetramin vegetable diet flakes crushed very finely between your fingers. Do not overfeed. Every few days or so, use 1/4" tubing to CAREFULLY siphon the bottom of their tank-don't siphon the babies-use your index finger to control the flow of the siphon. You will soon see how quickly they will grow. Good luck...PS: baby guppies do not 'gang up' on their mothers & eat them.....

Ok I just went through this experience, my fry are a month and a week old. It took them about a month for them to get to a size where their mom couldn't eat them, however, when I put the females in with their mom, THEY ate her!

At a month old they're still small, but big enough to not fit in an adult guppy's mouth but they're way faster, so they ganged up and pecked their mom to death when I wasn't paying attention. Maybe if she wasn't the only adult in the tank, or if it was a larger tank and better planted she could have evaded them, but as it is she was just too slow and they too quick.

At about a month old is when you can start telling which ones are the females (they have a "gravid spot" at the base of their tail) , males are much harder to tell apart since their fins are so tiny that its hard to see if they've formed their lower fin into the gonopodium . Around this age they just start developing some colors, ironically enough almost all of the females have dark markings on their tails while most of the males haven't. They've all started to develop an iridescent sheen on their bodies. Apparently they don't gain their full colors and size until about six months of age.

So to put things simply, unless you have a really big tank where everyone can hide from each other, you'll have to wait about six months.

To Antonio: I saw it happening, but rescued her too late. Just because its never happened to you doesn't mean its impossible or even unlikely.

I actually have mine in a 5 gal with a heater. They were born 2 weeks in the past and performance tripled in length! some are already starting up to get their colour-- a minimum of those that are going to have darkish tails are already getting their colour. So attractive! they are turning out to be a lot speedier than my platy fry.

my husband and i have had baby guppies for months.... they are still pretty small, i thought theyd be huge by now

if youre worried about them getting eaten by the big guys, you may consider getting a little container that goes in the big tank.
leave them in there for a few weeks (maybe a month) and they should be good to go

good luck and hope i helped
