Fish - November 2006

I had three goldfish in my tank, 1 comet, 1 common, and 1 shubunkin. Anyways, the comet goldie had fungus, so I treated the water with meds until he was cured. The day after he was cured, the common goldie got fin rot!!! First of all, why didn't that fish absorb the meds in the first place? Why did he get fin rot right after I put in meds that could cure fin rot and fungus??? Anyways, I put more meds in, and he got worse and died!!! And those meds were supposed to cure fin rot, fungus, and a variety of other diseases... why did that fish just die on me like that???

And PLEEEZ don't tell me "They're goldfish. They die fast!" Umm, noo!! Goldfish have a lifespan of 20 yrs+ if you take care of them, which I do. And if I put meds in, it's not exactly supposed to die.

Fish experts, pleeez help! Why did this happen!?

it looks like a very narrow slug but maybe a worm? Is it just an aquarim snail that hasn't grown a shell, it moves a little fast for a snail.

My current fish are:
1 algae eater
2 diamond tetras
5 neon tetras
4 mollies
1 swordtail

My aquarium is big enough, and I've read a lot about angels, but I was wondering if any of my current fish will have a problem with them.

I had a small 10-gallon tank set that I purchased and set up. After running the tank for 5 days without fish I purchased four neon tetras to start the tank. They were active and eating for about two full days. Then one died and I promptly removed him. Later I found one of them, struggling to swim around. It seemed like if a current from the filter caught him, or he stopped concentrating, he would flip upside down. When he did move around it seemed almost as if one side of him was paralyzed. As the minutes went on it seemed harder and harder for him not to flip upside down, until he finally died. This same thing happened about every 12 hours until all were dead. What happened? I emptied the water and rerinsed everything off and filled it back up. I used store bought stuff for eliminating the bad chemicals out of tap water and the pH is 7.2 a day later. How should I procede and what fish should I add? I want to end up with a good group of small schoaling fish and one or two other ones.

I am a longtime fish keeper, with experience in goldfish, live-bearing tropicals, and African Cichlids so I have some basic know-how but fully understand that saltwater aquariums are completely different and a lot more difficult. I have been thinking about it for years and am finally ready to get my first saltwater aquarium. I have done tons of reading and research, but want to know from those out there with experience, what books or web sites would you recommend I read before getting started? Also, I have a 55g aquarium-not reef ready...is it reasonable to use it, or would you suggest only using on already set up for saltwater? What are the best filters to use? Can I use the same filters from my fresh water set up (HOB filters w/biofiber, enough to filter a 120g aquarium, being used on a 55g)? What substrates would you suggest? I have super rinsed play sand for my Cichlids, lots of work to rinse but looks beautiful, would that work? What other tips or suggestions do you have?

my mollie has been swimming extremely close to the white skirted tetra and he has a little fin in the middle which he will poke her with a little lower then her fins. its not agressive but it will go on for 20 minutes and i am watching them do it right now. they have been doing this for about 3 days and it will go on about 20 minutes with about a 10 minute break in between and when they eat they don't do it either. what is going on with that?
