I got a German Shepherd puppy on Wednesday - she is absolutely gorgeous!

She has been fine since we picked her up - we got her from a good, reputable breeder and have kept her inside since picking her up. I took her for her first set of innoculations yesterday and she has been happy and playing all day. At about about six this evening she started vomiting and had really bad diarrhoea and was in pain. We called the emergency vet and took her in - they have put her on a drip and are keeping her in tonight. An X ray showed she has no obstruction in her gut but that her intestines are swollen.

I am so upset - we have done everything by the book to make sure she has the best start possible, the vet said 'I have to warn you that puppies with sickness and diarrhoea can suddenly go downhill'.

Has anybody else gone through something similar? I am not going to sleep tonight worrying that she wont get better.

I feel like the person who made this original post is mad because I didn't give the response that he/she wanted. Do you think I am out of line? I got a message saying that I had been reported due to my answer. What are your thoughts......

The question - "How long as (sic) my dog left til she gives birth?
i found out she was pregnant by a friend that knows alot (sic) about dogs, i have felt the puppies moving alot (sic) and her teets (sic) are leaking. yes it was planned and looking forward to meeting them. plz help"

My response was....."If it was planned, you should know the answer to this question BEFORE breeding. Be a responsible pet owner!"

Does this violate protocol? I know I should be asking this in the category Y!A, and I will, but I just want your opinion in the "dogs" section.

P.S. (sic) = spelling is correct... it's a quote, so I want to put what was EXACTLY said!

I've been hearing a lot lately about those new clothes for dogs. And i've seen a 'doggy show' modelling off the new clothes. Some of the dogs were dressed as a princess, pink dress and hat. Other dogs were dressed in sweaters and pants. And some were dressed as superman (ideal for costume parties at a house, then the dog can join in too) and there was one dog dressed in a dressing gown for sitting by the fire. Soon they're going to be having "bating suits" for dogs too i bet...to an extent, these clothes look cute, but is it really something that should become the "norm" or is it even fair on the dog to be made dressed up...?

A friend offered me a dog. Here's the information she gave me so far:
- One year old
- Black labrador retriever
- Already trained
- Free with a dog house

I plan on asking more questions about the dog.

My real question is, should I be getting this dog?

I am:
> a 13 yr old girl
> busy with sports (everyday after school (except on Wed.'s) until 4:30, sports on weekends, 8:00 1 hour practice on Wed's)
>I've had pet experience (2 rabbits)
>I'm responsible
>I live in a medium sized house
>I have a front and back yard
>I live in a safe and nice town
> no financial problems

JUST KIDDING!!

My real question:

Why do people want to breed their dog *after* we tell how much work is involved and what they are doing wrong? Even some people go on and *lie* saying "he has won shows before" "he has good blood lines". How do we know that you lieing? Because if your dog DID win shows you would know what you are doing. If your dog DID have good blood lines he would of came from a responcible breeder that wouldent sell pet puppies on unlimited registration.

So this is for those people. . .what makes you want to keep breeding your dog irresponsibly *after* we tell you that it is a bad idea and you are creating dogs that we keep having to fix in our breed and take the mistakes YOU made out. Why?

Do you get upset or offended when people say your dog is ugly or something like that?

I do personally because they are like my children.

Just wondering how many people out there own a Hovawart? My beautiful girl is just over two years old now. I live in Ontario, Canada and NO ONE has any idea what they are. They think she is a mix and don't believe me when I tell them she is a pure breed. Does anyone else have this problem? She has black and tan colouring (although only on her legs, none on her face. I'm fairly sure she doesn't meet the breed showing standard) so that may have something to do with people assuming she's a mix.

Tommorow it will be1 yr since my dog passed away. He had genetic lung cancer. I miss him so much each day, and since we spread his ashes over a beautiful pond -I visit him quite often & see him everyday before I go to my nearby college. I sometimes write letters for him and drop them into the water, bring his favorite treats & toys, things like that. =) it helps me heal and lets him know that he's not forgotten.

Anyone have any ideas they would like to share- on something special I can do for him tommorow? It's going to be a rough day for me. We appreciate it =)

We have a Staffie. When he goes for his evening walk, he starts chomping and slurping and smacking his lips. He's even starting to froth a bit at the mouth when he does this. I've noticed him doing it when he's licked the grass, but my boyfriend says he does it even when he hasn't tasted anything.

What is it? Is it a symptom of something? Or is he just SO excited to be on a walk?

Hi I just started volunteering at a local vet office and noticed there are a lot of prescription foods by Hills (like I/D and C/D) and was wondering what they are all for? I could ask the people I work with, but I would like to do a little research on the side and impress them! Thanks!

The SPCA said he was a daschund and jack russell, but i think he is too tall. I was thinking more along the lines of a daschund/treeing walker coonhound.

The original buyer of the dog gave him to us but never gave the papers to us. We're no longer in contact with the person who gave us the dog and the breeder won't give the papers to anyone but the original buyer. How can we get them? He has a chip registered to us and is licensed... we just want to get his papers!

My neighbors have two chihuahuas and they crap in my yard always. I just finished picking up 20 of their smelly craps. I'm tired of it and the smell is horrible. What can I do? Talking to the neighbors is not goint to work. My mom has, several times, tried to give them a hint about the problem by scooping up the poop and puting it on their yard, but it only worked for a while.

Hey, people are saying tha pit bulls are illegal, obviously they live in one of the few areas where criminals have latched onto this breed for their illegal activities. Anyone out there understand that banning pit bulls only keep the dogs in the hands of criminals, who do not care about laws? In Denver, they are seizing dogs from responsible owners, dogs who have never shown any aggression at all, while the criminals keep on fighting them and training them to attack humans! The ASPCA and literally every dog educated person opposes this! Do you really think that the sort of person who uses dogs as weapons cares about the law or would license their dogs? DUH! Pit bulls in the hands of good owners are wonderful pets, I have worked with them for years and never had a problem, other than rehabilitating dogs that were abused! It is the people who make vicious dogs, not the color of the dog, the shape, or any other thing. It would stop a lot more dog attacks to ban criminals from owning dogs!
