of course they can have puppies first but there are thousands and thousands of pets who do not have homes and get euthanised. It's terrible. also, the dog could develope something called a pyometra which is a uterus infection that can easily lead to death. hope that answered your question.

it is very important that you spay your pet. why? because there are so many inocent animals in shelters or on the streets that are there because of irresponsible people that thought they could handel a litter and at the end the pups ended up in the streets. even if you do give away all the pups they may still end up in a sheelter. Also, in shelters there is a limit on the amount of animals that can be there, and when that limit is excided they put the others to sleep.there is an over population of animals versuos people, for every person born 15 dogs and 45 cats are born, and really can 1 person keep that many animals? Therefore, you should definetly spay your pets.

there is absolutly no reason for them to have puppies. There are alot of risks associated with pregnancy and whelping. Puppies cost money to take care of. A cecarian can easily cost $1000 - 2000.. more if there are complications, or if the dog needs to go to an ER vet in the middle of the night to have it done. We already have plenty of dogs in the shelters. There are NO health benefits at all for a female to have a litter of pups.. it will not calm her down or prevent problems.

Spaying will calm her down. Spaying also prevents certain types of cancers. Spaying prevents serious uterine infections.. pyometra is one infection that is DEADLY if untreated! Only treatment is to spay and put on antibiotics.

Some dogs also just do not make good mothers, they may kill their pups or abandon them.

Animals need to be altered (spayed/neutered) because we are overpopulated. We are overpopulated because dogs can reproduce faster than we can: If a dog can reproduce 10 or 15 puppies in one life and we can only reproduce 1 or 2 children then the average household does not have the means to care for the number of dogs they would need to in order to save them all. Think about it, I'll lower the numbers down so that we can take a close look at it: If the census for our country was only 100 people, and 50 dogs/cats to start out with, then how long would it be before we'd have too many animals? Well, lets just say that in this scenario a dog can produce an average of 5 pups a year and that within one year the pups would be full grown (whereas it takes 18 years to make a human full-grown and most Americans only have one or two children). So if 25 of those dogs reproduced and each had a litter of 5 pups then within the year we would have 175 full grown dogs (the original 50, plus the 125 second generation) and only 100 Americans who are full grown and can care for a dog so 75 Americans would have to have two dogs, no big deal, yet. Next year 87 dogs reproduce and have 5 pups each so within the year we have 613 full grown dogs (the original 50 plus the 125 second generation plus the 438 third generation) and still only 100 full grown humans who can house a dog, which would mean that every human would have to house about 6 or 7 dogs to find them all homes. In this scenario, it took us only two years to become overpopulated with pets. Dogs can reproduce faster than we can, that's a simple fact. Even if we had 5 kids each like the dogs did, our kids take 18 years to grow up and dogs are full grown (and able to reproduce) only a year after being born. unless we have our pets spayed/neutered then they will always outnumber us. And because there are too many dogs to find loving homes for them all (because not everyone wants a dog, and not everyone loves dogs), alot of dogs get killed (put to sleep/euthanized) in shelters. Think of it this way, if you were to breed your dog just once and by some miracle you found loving homes for all of the pups, the people who take your dog's pup's are not going to go to the shelter and adopt a dog there, so if your dog had 5 puppies, that means that 5 shelter puppies would be killed because their home was taken already. Also, how do you know that they would keep the puppies you give them? They may have the puppy for a year or two but then decide that they don't want it anymore because of a behavioral problem or because they move somewhere where they can't take the dog with. Then that puppy still ends up in the shelter, probably killed because it can't find a home.
speaking in statistics:
there are currently 261,655 homeless animals up for adoption on petfinder.com, 163,740 of them are dogs, most of them will be killed because they won't find homes

you really seem to care about your dog, if you really care about her then you should consider how dangerous it would be for her to have a litter:

please be responsible with your dog
a true animal lover would spay/neuter their pets
I completely agree with cindy below me in her comparison of a dog having a litter of puppies being similar to allowing your preteen daughter have a baby...just because she can doesn't mean she should

They can but they don't need to. I'd hate to sound like a slogan or something, but for every puppy a breeder produced, a perfectly healthy and stable dog in a shelter is killed. Also, if a bltch gets pregnant by a dog larger than her there could be compilations during whelping, and may result in the pups or dam dying. It's more common in small dogs, though.

On average a spayed bltch lives 2 years longer, and the risks of cancer and significantly reduced. The dog's don't know what has happened so it doesn't bother them. My puppy got spayed on Friday and she was back to her normal self by Saturday morning.
Dog's don't see litters of puppies and want them, like humans see children and want kids. They only reproduce because of hormones, not emotions. It's healthier and less stressful for a dog not to have pups. Would you enjoy carrying a litter of more than 4, lol.

What if every female dog had one litter of puppies before getting spayed?????

That would mean MORE dogs for me to rescue and MORE dog for me to euthanize.

Letting your dog have puppies might not effect YOU, but it effects many others in the long run. Being a responsible pet owner means taking these things into account. Just because you think puppies are cute and you want your dog to have some does not make it a GOOD decision!!

Take a trip to your local animal shelter. See how many puppies are brought to them each month/year that they have to kill - euthanize. It is heartbreaking. Thousands a year are killed because there are no homes for them.

It is an old wives/husband's tale that a female dog should have a litter before being spayed. It does her absolutely no good and she is healthier longer if she is spayed when her vet recommends. I bet your vet would say the same thing you hear on this list. Too many dogs killed each year because the humans want to breed them.

Google dog statistics and see. You will be aghast.

There are to many unwanted dogs in this country already. Irresponsible people want a dog but don't take the responsibility of taking care of it. Spaying your dog will stop the heat cycle which is uncomfortable for the dog. Also some dogs can get a uterine infection after the heat cycle. It's just healthier for your dog.

Not sure why every fool on every corner in the land feels they need their dog to have puppies first but these kinds of thoughts are pure ignorance to the problems with over population and people don't seem to think about the thousands of dogs who are killed with the lethal jab everyday because no one wants them.
Everyone lives in the moment of having a litter with no concern or care for the future. People don't realize that if their dog has pups and half of those have pups and half of those have pups and many of them have pups 2 to 5 times... Look how many pups can be born from the result of ONE breeding...
There is no shortage of pets and pets do not owe people anything and the miracle of birth can be seen on Animal Planet with out contributing to the problems of over population.

Take a visit to your local shelters & rescues. There are so many dogs & puppies that need homes. Their lives depend on it. Why add to the homeless animal population?

That's why dogs should be spayed & neutered instead of allowed to breed, even once. There is a lot that should be considered, before breeding (heath, temperament, age, etc.) Not every dog is a candidate for breeding, anyways.

It's a dominance thing. Also if the dog has learned that behavior pre-spay it isn't a fool proof. Just like male dogs can still mark territory and hump after neuter.
