The original buyer of the dog gave him to us but never gave the papers to us. We're no longer in contact with the person who gave us the dog and the breeder won't give the papers to anyone but the original buyer. How can we get them? He has a chip registered to us and is licensed... we just want to get his papers!

The original buyer of the dog gave him to us but never picked up the papers from the store where she bought him. We're no longer in contact with the person who gave us the dog and the store still has his papers but won't give them to anyone but the original buyer. How can we get them?

Thanks to everyone who responded. Just to make clear: 1. We did not and never would buy a dog from a store - we basically rescued a dog that was 2. He's actually breed standard (yup, from a pet store) according to our research and professional second opinions so we're under no delusions about him being a mutt.

If they exist the breeder gave them to the buyer at the time of purchase. If you didn't get them they don't exist. Microchip means nothing
Added:
Store???
Its a mutt. At least you were given the dog they got screwed and probably paid a fortune.

The breeder should have transfered the papers to the original buyer and so no longer has them to transfer to someone else. You cannot register the dog in your name unless the owner signs the papers over to you using the correct form. If for some reason the breeder does have the papers and never transfered them to the original owner they still have not way of verifying that this is the dog they sold, unless they are the ones that microchipped him and can verify by that. No responsible breeder would give you papers for a dog they are not sure is the one they sold. (but then most responsible breeder have buyers sign a contract saying they must return the dog to them if they can't keep it)
EDIT: Good for you rescuing him. Did the store microchip him so that you have proof that he came from there or the the person you got him from microchip him? If the store microchipped him you may be able to speak with a corporate office or a manager and get the papers. If not the the same problem still exists they have not proof that that is the same dog they sold so can use that as justification for not turning over the papers.

You are not going to get them. Its OBVIOUS here that both parties are at fault. First of all, a reputable breeder who sells their puppies will do so on a spay/neuter contract, meaning that the new owners MUST get the dog fixed in order to get the dogs papers in a certain amount of time. Obviously this previous owner didn't do that and never go these papers. Most breeders have NON transferable papers meaning they cannot sell or give the dog away WITHOUT THE BREEDERS CONSENT, and since the original owner bought from a pet store, chances are that these papers don't even exist anyways. Did you know that a if a registered (CKC or ACK...) breeder is guilty of knowledgably selling their pups to a pet store they can be fined and have a criminal record? It's serious stuff. Spay/neuter the dog, because you aren't going to be able to breed it under the registries, and you aren't going to be able to show it without the papers. Just be happy you have added a COMPANION to your household.

CKC can mean 2 things: Canadian Kennel Club- only good in Canada, but a real registry
-OR-
Continental Kennel Club- which should read CRAP Kennel Club because it 'registers' mutts, 'designers' and non-recognized breeds. A girl here on YA registered a gerbil as a Shetland Sheepdog with this waste of paper and money.
Do NOT go there! You need to do a people search on Google and find the original owners. If they misplaced the papers, at least they could sign the dog over to you with a notary present. That might get the breeder to re-issue papers.
EDIT: He's from a pet store? You don't need his papers, they're useless. You won't have any success showing a pet store puppy and you certainly don't want to breed it...too many health problems. Neuter and forget about it. He's still a great pet...

There is only ONE set of papers for a dog.
If you've lost contact with the person that bought the dog, you're out of luck. THAT'S where the papers are at.
The breeder of the dog can't do anything once they've signed the papers over to the first owner.
Think of it like a car. Once the title is signed over to the original buyer the dealer who originally sold the car can't do anything. That's what you're asking.

You can not get them and I applaud the breeder for being reputable. My pups papers are non transferable also. Just spay her like the breeder expected of the first owner who turned out to be an idiot.
Ok, second thought, I do not applaud the breeder.. you bought from a pet store which means the puppy came from a puppy mill. Just neuter him and love him and please know that he was born into a horrific place. Never buy from a pet store.

You can't do anything about it.
Look at this from another point of view... You sold a golden retriever puppy... some person comes to you saying they got a golden from the person who bought one from you... How do YOU know its the same pup and not just some other golden they bought?
Seriously... this is a scam pulled all the time.. and the seller/breeder would be irresponsible to turn the papers over to you.

Unless the OWNER signs them over to you, you cannot.
The pet store is not the BREEDER. The BREEDER was some puppymill someplace!!!!!! The pet store has no legal obligation to give you the dogs papers. You were not the buyer!!! Unless the former owner goes and get them, you are SOL. Who cares!!! Psay or neuter the pet store dog and don't worry about it!!!!!!

Unless you plan to breed him, then papers aren't worth much anyways, and definitely not worth the hassle of dealing with a reluctant breeder to get.

Sadly, theres nothng you can do.
If the dog is not signed over to you, then theres no way you can get papers.
If you try to go to another club, they will check and see who the dog "belongs" too.
