I've been hearing a lot lately about those new clothes for dogs. And i've seen a 'doggy show' modelling off the new clothes. Some of the dogs were dressed as a princess, pink dress and hat. Other dogs were dressed in sweaters and pants. And some were dressed as superman (ideal for costume parties at a house, then the dog can join in too) and there was one dog dressed in a dressing gown for sitting by the fire. Soon they're going to be having "bating suits" for dogs too i bet...to an extent, these clothes look cute, but is it really something that should become the "norm" or is it even fair on the dog to be made dressed up...?

i have a dog, but i think it is cruel to dress up animals..unless it is a certain occasion, i mean i got him a halloween cotsume, but make "him or her" comfortable in the outift too!
i got him a little football t-shirt for halloween, but something just simple, not too much or they get uncomfortable

Ya know i was never a fan of dog clothes until i adopted a little dog...she is a Chi/Boston mix and has a VERY thin coat. When i take her out early in the morning or once the sun goes down without a sweater or something on she is a shaking mess!! I am pretty sure my dog would die if i left her outside "where dogs are supposed to be" like some other people mentioned. Oh ya..and they do already have bating suits for dogs...i have seen them!!!!

It depends on the animal...
if you start when they are young with putting sweaters and t-shirts on them then they usually get used to it and are ok with wearing clothes
if they are not ok with clothes they will let you know they don't want it:
my dog growled at anyone who attempted to put a jacket on her so I respected that she didn't like it and I didn't force her to do anything she didn't want to do, so I don't try to dress her up (besides maybe a special collar or bandanna)
my cat, on the other hand, was very small last winter so I had to put a sweater on him every time we left the house otherwise he'd start shivering and now he is used to wearing clothes, in fact he really seems to enjoy the attention that people give him when he goes for a walk wearing a cute t-shirt and he even goes trick-or-treating for unicef in a costume!

like I said, it depends on the animal:
if the dog does not seem to mind wearing the clothing, or maybe even likes the extra attention s/he gets then it's ok
however if a dog growls/bites/fights back against the clothing in anyway, or tries to remove the clothes after you have put it on them, then I would think it was cruel to attempt to dress them up for any occasion.
Respect the dogs wishes and it's never cruel

I live in New England, and we get some pretty bad winters. Sweaters are a must for my 10 year old Chihuahua, as she has arthritis which is worsened by cold weather. I much rather be seen as ridiculous by people against dogs wearing clothes than have a dog that can barely walk because of the pain.

As for those who insist their dogs wear bathing suits and other clothes, I think it's silly. But, to each his/her own.

I think the only reason to put clothes on a dog is if it needs it for walks when it's cold outside, for example. Clothes are fine for dogs that are susceptible to cold, like chihuahuas. But, even then I think princess dresses, and costumes are unnecessary and ridiculous looking. Poor dogs! More functional things like little jackets or sweaters are okay, I think.

Clothes for dogs for practical purposes are good. Some breeds don't have undercoats to help keep them warm, so they need a jacket or sweater to help keep them warm when going outside.

You also have to keep in mind that some people view their dogs are their kids, and dressing them up is just something that you do.

I happen to have a Boston Terrier which does not have an undercoat to keep him warm. He does have a sweater, and we had to get him a hooded jacket when we went to the mountains. It is not an option to leave him at home and out of the cooler climate. He goes where we go.

Having said that, we also got him a neat little t-shirt that he ABSOLUTLY will NOT wear, as much as we would like him to wear it.

Some dogs will love the attention they get dressed up, some will tolerate it to please their people, and others will never adjust to clothes wearing. I think that the more an owner considers their dog a member of their family, the more apt they are to want to treat them like a pampered child, which includes dressing them up. I myself have lovingly knitted sweaters for my pugs. When we lived in Alaska, our pug, Buster, would wait until we dressed him in a coat or sweater before going out in the winter.

I think it needs to be in moderation. My puppy doesn't mind wearing clothes every once in a while... and while the weather is cold he loves having his sweater on while outside. That being said, I am not putting him in itchy dresses or bathrobes or a bathing suit (which i have seen !), but a t-shirt probably once every three weeks, and his sweater when it is cold enough for me to wear my winter jacket (short haired puppy... gets cold easily). He will also probably wear boots when it snows if he shows signs of wanting to.

So moderation it can be cute and even beneficial, but that being said, lets keep it about the dog and not about Paris Hilton trendsetting and humiliating the puppy.

Sweaters and such for warmth is acceptable. Special occasions like Halloween or a birthday are OK as long as they're not overdone. But putting a two thousand dollar tutu on a pit bull named Killer is excessive and cruel. Unless the dog truly likes it. But since dogs can't speak, who can say what they really like anyway?

I am only for Coats and Jackets.
Maybe a Shirt or two but one that fits fit and around the body, other than those two I am against. I have a chihuahua and she needs a coat when we go out morning because its a little chilly but it gets warmer through out the evening. As someone else said she will shake if she gets out in the cold bare and mine is a short haired so its really needed. People who dress their dogs are completely for their own pleasure, not thinking if the dog likes it or not.... or maybe in their minds they think the dog likes it, of course..
They have this contest going on at petsmart for the best dressed halloween dog but I think its nonsense.
I am also appalled at dog shoes. Take a look at this, plain torture..

And they think its funny.
