Any dog can be taught to go outside and in a certain part of the yard. Some will take longer than others, depending on the dog, their age, and any past history.

First and foremost, when you cannot watch the dog, i.e., at night or when you are not home, the dog needs to be confined to a crate or very small area. A dog will not soil their “home”, as they don’t want to be near it, either!

As soon as you get home, or when you get up in the morning, put the dog on leash, and walk them outside to a spot where you want them to go. Always go to the same area. This will become their potty spot, and will make things a lot easier for clean up. As you go outside with them, tell them to “go potty”. They will soon learn what this means, which will help in the long run.

As soon as they go outside where they are supposed to, a lot of praise, petting, and an occasional treat. This will reinforce that you are happy with them. Do this praise immediately, as a dog’s attention span is very short and if you wait, they will be happy you are praising them, but they will not know why you are praising them.

If the dog makes a mistake and goes in the house –
If you are there and see them start to go, tell them “no” in a firm voice, immediately take them outside to their potty spot.
If you do not see them actually in the act, then do nothing. Scolding the dog after the fact will not teach them, as they will not remember what they did and will not know why you are angry.

Do not give the dog food or water within 2 hours of bed time.
Get the dog on a schedule as soon as possible for feeding and potty times. The dog’s internal system will soon learn this schedule and they will be able to wait until their scheduled time.

How old is your dog? Is it a puppy? If so puppies really cannot feel they have to use the bathroom until they are 12 weeks of age. Before then they might want to please you and go outside but they can't feel the urge until it is too late. Have you thought about crate training? That is a very effective way to potty train a dog. The idea is you get a crate that is only big enough to stand up and turn around in and then lay down. Dogs will not soil their sleeping space. But keep in mind if you do get a crate that has more room than that they will go in there because there will still be enough room to sleep away from the poop or pee. If your dog is still growing you can get a larger crate and then just section it off with some thick cardboard or wire screen until it is the appropriate size.
You only want to put your dog in the crate when you are not home or cannot monitor the dog. Do not put the dog in the crate as a punishment. You want the crate to be a fun place with toys and treats so they want to go in there...eventually some dogs will prefer to sleep in there with the door open when they are older and able to be trusted.
Also consistancy is a must with training a dog. You need to get that dog on a schedule and stick to it. Keep in mind if you do have a puppy they can only hold it for so long. Usually for every month a pup can hold it for an hour. SO if your dog is 5 months it can hold it for 5 hours. Try not to leave your dog for long periods of time if you can. Take your dog out as soon as you get up before you feed it and then about an hour after it has eaten. Also limit water availablity to only til a certain time at night. This helps with your dog not having access to water all the time so it doesn't have to pee all the time.
Good Luck, and just be patient with your dog. Being totally reliable takes time. Depending on the breed some learn more quickly than others. My pug wasn't fully reliable until about 1year of age. Even now at 4 sometimes he will have an accident. You just need to be consistent! And reward the heck out of your dog when they go outside. Make it a big deal when they potty outside, praise alot and give a treat.

how do you train a dog that hates going outside? We adopted a 11 month old and have no background info on her. She is a very smart dog. We walk her atleast 6 times a day and she has refused to go to the bathroom outside. She spends the whole time fighting to get back to the house. She has even memorized the way home. I watch her all day to make sure she doesnt go in the house and she does maybe once or twice in a day. Otherwise she doesnt go at all. What do I do?

Control his food first. Give him food at a certain time and he will start doing #2 on a regualar time schedule. You'll then know roughly when to take him out. Don't however hold back his water. Just take him out frequently and make sure he uses the bathroom before he goes back inside. If he goes then your good for a while. He may have bladder control issuse, especially if he's less than around 8 months old, but it sounds like he just doesn't know better. So if you try the above he should understand where to go when he needs to.

PS - don't yell or punish him for going in the house unless he's in the act. It works both ways though. If you can catch him in he act and take him outside quickly, he'll get it alot quicker. Good luck.

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Get puppy pads. They work awesome. Move the pad closer to the door everyday and eventually outside. Make sure you take the dog out at least every two hours so it gets the point. If it is drinking water or eating take it out 30 mins after because puppies can't hold it very long. Everytime he goes where he is supposed to give him a treat. Be patient and get a steam cleaner.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/JKTdN

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.
