Just got the dog about a month ago and he is great with kids and has never acted aggresively even with my 4 and 5 year old boys. He attached himself immediately to my wife and follows her around. When we go to bed at night (I know the dog should have never been allowed to inhabit my bed, but he's so small I never notice him there) if my wife gets into bed first, the dog growls at me. If I say his name loud or advance to him, he cowers and jumps off and hides. It is possible he was treated harshly by his previous owner but I doubt he was abused. I've never laid a hand on the dog to scold him, haven't needed to. His reaction is more comical than frightening, he acts like he's annoyed when I come to bed with my wife but even with the growling, he is so afraid of me he shakes. Can anyone explain his behaviour? I can only assume he is annoyed that I am interfering with his being with my wife but don't pretend to understand dog logic.

Hi my neighbours cavalier (7mnths) maybe older, had a fall 1 week ago and has an occasional limp now and then, we did the leg stretches (which vets do to check joints) no reaction, he is eating fine and he runs around with no pain, he isn't lifting up his paw, nails are trimmed. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

I have 3 male dogs. One is a 5 yr old mini dachshund who is kinda spoiled and very attached to me. The 2nd is a 10 month old mini dachshund who has quite the personality. The 3rd is a 4 month old rescued shar pei. In the last 2 weeks the 10 month old has started attacking the 5 yr old. They fought so bad last night that the 5 yr old was bleeding. He also blocks him from eating out of the food dish. The 5 yr old is fixed but has always been the leader of the pack. Is this something the 10 month old will grow out of?

First, how do you deal with this? I knew it was coming soon because the vet said his condition was going to get him soon (heart murmur and kidneys failing). I thought I was prepared. I put him in a box, had my morning cereal, and read the paper like any other day. I drove out to the country where my cat is buried and dug a hole. Everything was fine until I put him in the hole. I started sobbing like a child and can't seem to stop. We brought him home from the pound 13 years ago and he has been my buddy ever since. I work from home and he sat by my side all day every day. I just wonder how to proceed from here. I'm so sad.
Also, my sheepdog worshipped the ground he walked on. She seems confused and I don't know what to do. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

I have a 6 year old Shiba Inu, it is temperamental and independent, he seems to not respect me at all, he only lets my mom pet him, and everytime I want to pet him he acts anoyed and bites me.

Even sometimes he wants to be pet, and after a lil while he might eventually realease a bite for no apparent reason, so I don't trust him anymore.

How could I train him to respect me?, what kind of punishment should I induce to him?.

In fact we love him very much, we take him for a walk everyday, etc. So it doesn't make sense for him to be so irrespectful.

My fiancee & I are moving in with his parents for a few months to save $ for a house, they have 40+ acres & our older dog has lived their previously and is great about staying in the large yard (the road is atleast 1/2mile away, gravel driveway thru woods)

We have a new 16wk lab, she will be about 5mo when we move there, is there an age limit for invisible fence? Will it harm her being so young?

Also, if our older dog goes outside the boundries as he wont have the collar on, will the pup follow even through the fence?

I have no experience with Invisible fence so any stories, advice, etc are appreciated.

She was scratched in the eye yesterday and her eye watered a lot and overnight her eye got really cloudy. It is still watering, and is very cloudy, but she acts normal and doesn't seem to be irritated by her eye. Is there something that I can do to help her eye, or is she blind? Will the cloudiness clear up? I am very concerned and would hate to see her lose sight in the eye. Thanks in advance for any help that I can get!

I have a 2 year old chunky labrador who has had a joint condition called OCB since he was born so we can't exercise him too much.

due to this & ever since he was neutered he gained some weight.

We tried for ages to get the weight off him but nothing worked so we went to the vet and he recommended a blood test as he thought he may of had a thyroid problem but the results came back negitive.

he was put on a supposedly "miracle" weight loss medicine in his meals of 2 chicken breasts per day and the same weight in cooked pasta.

3 weeks later we went back & he said we had to reduce it to 1 chicken breast & the equal weight in pasta per day as he hadn't lost any weight.

He is now on 3/4 of a chicken breast and the equal weight of pasta per day and has only lost 0.3kg over 3 months. He has really had no treats AT ALL and has had the most excercise he has had since he was a puppy.

Any ideas what could be wrong with him ?

He wants to jump on everyone (to play not to hurt anyone.) and pulls me during his walks. i tried it on him yesterday and it seemed to have helped the jumping some. but i dont want to hurt him or confuse him when he's playing with the kids i dont want him to feel punished.but i dont want him always jumping on them.
he is a great dog but a little hyper.we play with him and walk him but he just wants to jump on us and pull who ever is walking him.

I have a 9 month old yorkie pup who is not that housetrained still. She just doesnt tell me when she needs to go out. I am working hard on that. But, I am going to florida june 27 to july 7th. I need someone to take care of my puppy while i am gone. I am torn if I should put her in a kennel or let her stay with this woman my mom works witih that has seen her before and really wants to take care of her. Here is why:I don't want coco to feel overwhelmed with stangers for that time since they dont have any other dogs. In a kennel maybe she will miss me less if she is playing with other dogs all the time.Coco gets up at 4:00 each morning to go pee and poo. I don't want to have the woman suffer at her house taking her out. At a kennel they probably dont take them out that early and this could help coco learn to hold it. Lastly I dont want coco to think that she has a new family. In a kenel she is with other dogs who are a different type of social interraction. So, what should i do?

I have read a lot of contradicting information on the internet, about crate training. Now I am unsure of whether or not to leave the pup in the crate while we are at work. I know crates are used primarily for toilet training... but is it ok to leave the pup in the crate for up to 8 hours while we are not home? Most of the info says to only leave the pup in the crate for short periods of time... like an hour or so. Is it ok to have some bedding and chew toys in the crate? Or should it be bare? I have read all sorts of different methods and I just want to know what has worked in your experience.

Thanks everyone in advance for your help!

Is this true? If so, how much of her personality will change? Please share if you have had experience with this.

Background: I have two boxer puppies (seperate litters). Now, I am thinking about spaying my female, but I am really concerned that she will lose her aggressivness and her passion (what makes her really special).

Now, she is not a mean dog, very loving, but she is like an alpha female. She is really territorial, possesive, and smart. Out of the two dogs, she is the dominant and smarter one. Now, my male (from what I can tell), will be the larger of the two dogs. So I would prefer that she stay dominant and in control.

Now, if I get her spayed, how dramitically will her personality change? Do you think she will still have most of the instincts that have made her special and dominant?

I am going to get my 4mo chocolate lab spayed in 3 weeks. I know this is the right thing to do, and I've researched the advantages which obviously out weight any disadvantages, but im still worried.

Its never been a question whether to spay or not, she is purebred but I am not ready for the resonsibility of breeding nor is she a proper canidate (do not show or compete)no matter how beautiful she is to me.

I grew up with dogs, but being 23 this is my first puppy that is my complete resonsibility.

I am just so scared to drop her off that morning, have her be cut open, and then have stiches and be in pain....it just upsets me to think about it, although I know its for the best.

Did anyone else have these hesitations? I AM doing the right thing, right??

Should I still be putting Frontline on my puppy in the winter when it is cold and snowy, or are fleas not a threat during the cold winter months? I live in New Jersey if that helps.

Also I have a cat that only stays indoors and is flea free. I put Frontline on my puppy monthly so he also has no fleas. Should I be putting Frontline on my kitty too, just in case, or is that really not necessary if he never goes outside. I brush him and check for fleas regularly.
