You know when a dog, or any animal is dying, when there are significant changes in habits. The dog will not want to eat or drink, want to sleep more, probably not want to go out, may not pee or defecate. The dog will be listless and may even want to be ignored.

How do I know? Been there three times with older dogs.

oh yeah also they may try to take themselves out, dogs are very smart, my grandma had a dog he was old and raggedy and was tied up all the time had a bad skin condition, and ate that cheap 99cent store dry food, when he made it off his chain he use to go lay in the street, in the middle and i would pick him up because he didn't want to move but he would make it back out there, and its not like he didn't know because he had already been hit before, yeah thats a sign that he wants out, badly.

My dog past away in Jan. She was 16 years old, Rot/Dobi cross. I knew that I was loosing her when she stopped eating and drinking. I tried to keep food and water near her at all times. She refused both.
