Just because your dog was fine last time he went to the vets does not mean he can't have developed a problem since then!
This is a list of likey causes of coughing in dogs, most likely first:
+ kennel cough (is he vaccinated against this?)
+ 'backwards sneezing'
+ other respiratory infection
+ heart problems
+ collapsing trachea
Take him back to the vet. Kennel cough is the most common cause of coughing in dogs. Contrary to what people may tell you, kennel cough is not 'harmless' - it can lead to dangerous secondary infections if left untreated, and is highly contagious.

If your dog just went to the vet and received the bordatella vaccination it might be from that. That vaccination is for kennel cough and sometimes when they receive the shot, they'll show symptoms such as coughing. My dog did that and the vet gave him cough medicine (for dogs though).
