I have a 2 year old chunky labrador who has had a joint condition called OCB since he was born so we can't exercise him too much.
due to this & ever since he was neutered he gained some weight.
We tried for ages to get the weight off him but nothing worked so we went to the vet and he recommended a blood test as he thought he may of had a thyroid problem but the results came back negitive.
he was put on a supposedly "miracle" weight loss medicine in his meals of 2 chicken breasts per day and the same weight in cooked pasta.
3 weeks later we went back & he said we had to reduce it to 1 chicken breast & the equal weight in pasta per day as he hadn't lost any weight.
He is now on 3/4 of a chicken breast and the equal weight of pasta per day and has only lost 0.3kg over 3 months. He has really had no treats AT ALL and has had the most excercise he has had since he was a puppy.
Any ideas what could be wrong with him ?

umm. why do you feed your dog pasta? This is not a very good diet for him in the first place. you need to get him on a weight loss DOG FOOD and only feed him about twice a day with at least 3 walkings throughout.

Dont give him weight loss pills, it may help initially, but long term its not the answer.
It sounds to me like your vet is an idiot, Hill's Science diet for weight loss is the best way to put a dog on a diet, the current one is woefully short of nutrients, and dogs need pasta like a fish needs skates, where would a wolf get bloody pasta from, its a mad idea, either go to a large petstore and have a good look at the Hills range, or get better advice from another vet.
All animals metabolism will slow down if the body thinks its starving, same with humans, your dog will not lose weight sensibly on such tiny amounts of food, he will just think hes bieng starved, small proper meals two or three times a day and as much excercise as he can stand will show results, one chicken breast a day and a measly amount of pasta is not enough for a Lab.

Also include 10 grams connected with fiber to satiate hunger longer which will help prevent bloating from constipation.

I don't know any vet that would prescribe that diet.
The best thing is a controlled portion once a day of a well-balanced dog food so he gets enough vitamins and minerals.
I would not give him a weight-loss drug and I would get a new vet. I wish you a wonderful happy long life with your dog.

Follow the 80/20 rule, which means eating clean 80 percent almost daily and indulging a little 20 percent of the time.

Weight loss and refusal of food is a RED FLAG. There really is no way to diagnose him but he does need to see the vet ASAP. I do not want to alarm you, but his age could be a factor, and arthritis could be part of his stiffness. But do get him to the Vet soon. He needs medical attention.
