There is an incredible amount of information out there about vaccines and their side effects. Often previously considered to be benign and harmless, now we are learning that we were wrong! Vaccines can have very many serious side effects, including autoimmune disorders, epilepsy, encephalitis, allergies, behavior problems, digestive disorders, cancer and death.

Did you know that you should NEVER give combination vaccines (a vaccine that contains more than one virus). The vast majority of vets give these combination vaccines only, so you will likely have to ask your vet to special-order your puppy’s vaccines for you. They may tell you its not possible to get a single-virus vaccine, don't believe them! Many don't want to order it in because it is more work for them! Galaxy makes the "Galaxy-D" single distemper vaccine; Intervet (Proguard) and Duramune both make single Parvo vaccines.

The all-to-common multi-virus vaccines tend to confuse to immune system rather than stimulate it. Many of these combo-vaccines contain anywhere from 5-8 different diseases! Where in nature would your dog be exposed to that many diseases all at the same time? You can only imagine the dog would have a very difficult time effectively fighting that many diseases at once! Just think about the stress on the dog's immune system, and especially on a young puppy who's immune system is still developing. Excessive vaccination can actually cause the immune system to cease working altogether. I call that the "I can't handle it anymore, I quit!" response.

Did you know...There is no valid reason for giving the same vaccine over and over again to a puppy. The reason this practice was started is because puppies receive maternal antibodies from their dam while they are nursing, and these gradually wear off after weaning. But they wear off at different rates in different puppies, so we have no way of knowing for sure when they have worn off....it can be anywhere from 5-16 weeks, although the average is 6-10. Giving a puppy shots while it still has maternal antibodies is useless, as the maternal antibodies will "block" the vaccine and prevent immunity from being established. So vets in their infinite wisdom decided to give puppies vaccines over and over again so that eventually one will be given after the maternal antibodies are worn down. But since we don't know when they were down, it could leave pups unprotected for several weeks, which is why vets will tell you to keep your young puppy off the streets and away from strange dogs until it "has had all its shots" at 12-16 weeks.

So if we have to keep puppy isolated even if giving all these most-likely useless shots, then why do we bother putting all that extra stress on the poor puppy's system? Doesn't it make more sense to not give those shots (since they likely won't work anyway) and just be careful with puppy until he is a little older? Stay away from dog parks, pet stores and other areas frequented by large numbers of dogs until after 4 months old. Do your public socializing outside the grocery store, library, Home Depot, any place you can think about that has lots of people, but few dogs. Invite people over to your house to play with puppy, they can bring their adult, healthy dogs with them for playtime.

The practice of giving annual vaccinations is a practice developed by the vaccine manufacturers, so that they will sell more vaccines. Vaccines don't suddenly "expire" after a year, that's just when the manufacturer's stopped testing the immunity. ONCE IMMUNITY TO A VIRUS EXISTS, IT PERSISTS FOR YEARS OR LIFE. There is no need to keep rechecking titers and revaccinating every 3 years or whatever. You cannot add more immunity to an already immune dog. It is not immunologically possible. All you are doing is increasing the risk of chronic disease....there is no benefit.

to all those who replied in my thread about liberty's trip to the vet, they had to put her to sleep. I might not be posting much for a while as this is the second JRT I've lost since my family had die on us since we moved here. I know that hit and run is the number one killer of JRT's but it does'nt still help me with the pain of my loss. I feel like I've lost a child .
I've got to find out if we can bury her or not. But at least I have lots of pictures of her and precious. I thnk that Princess suspects that her daughter is gone as she gave birth to her and was her mother. Now Princess has lost both her mate and her only chilld(one died when he was two days old, once again very hard on me).

I think that Scruffy was trying to tell me of what was going to happen to liberty since she ran out of the house yesterday while I was sleeping for work. I wish I had listened to him in my dreams. Now I'm gonna have a hard July 4th as it was Liberty's B-day. She was almost 5 years old.

I have a maltese that I know is AKC registerable. I bought him from a pet shop and the only papers that I received were his pedigree papers and his microchip registration papers. The AKC registration application was sent to the pet shop owner but I was never informed. It has almost been a year and the pet shop has been sold since then. I contacted the breeder and she had to go through the puppy broker. Puppy broker said they can't do anything without proof of purchase. New pet shop owner hardly speaks english and won't help out. Can I do something legally to get these papers? I don't want to but I want my dog registered.

I just recently adopted a 2 year old pug named Jack which is a dream come true for me to own a pug, but he's driving me up the wall. He is peeing on everything and won't lay still. I can't just follow him around to make sure he doesn't pee and the only time he lays still is when we are sleeping. But everytime he runs around I live in constant fear that he is going to pee on something else. I love him to death, but at this point I'm saying it's either my house or him. We have a 5 year old lab who is just wonderful. Although now, she is running around with him and constantly biting him on the chest and neck(not hard, but nibbling), but she won't relax now and she was always such a calm dog. He also will not stay out of her crotch. His face is constantly buried in her. We are getting him fixed around the 1st, but I need to know if there is something I can do to calm down my household. The peeing, humping and all together chaos that is going on!

I know I sound really stupid, but I'm flying and we are hiring a moving company to move our cars and other items. My husband says that the dogs can go on a plane, but they are kept in the same area as the luggage. That just seems mean! Is this true, have you done it, do you know of an alternative way for them to travel?

If so, is your dog a toy dog, which tend to be more indoor dogs? Just wondering out of curiousity how many people share their personal living space such as the bed and bath with their dogs.

Are you prepared for a pet emergency? You can buy a kit or make your own. Even some minimal supplies can save your pet till it can get to the vet ! This is not an ad, I don't sell things, just suggesting a good idea.

The vet once said it was an allergy to beef that caused it..then, another time, said it was a yeast infection..we are confused! We try all kinds of ways to help her..she will dig her ears raw if we don't put something in there to help, and her ears have a foul odor. The crud in her ears look a nasty brown color. She also has a "foot fetish"..licks and licks her feet..not a normal grooming lick, but keeps at it for a long time! Will even chew on her toenails! She does it so long that if she is laying on the carpet, she gets it soaked where she is licking! Anyone out there familiar with these problems and have a suggestion or a solution?

Can you train a dog to like getting in the water i.e. baths, swimming pools, etc. ?

I thought maybe with repetition a could teach my dog to actually jump into the bath tub without a lot of coercion. What do you think?

A large, stray dog has been hanging about my house for a couple of months. I called the humane society twice to come and get him, but they never showed. So... out of pity I began putting food and water out for him daily. Today, he is very lethargic and seems to have some ataxia of his hind legs- they sort of 'give out' on him a bit. From his teeth, I can tell he is still quite young. Does ataxia usually indicate poisoning? He's had no diarhrea or vomiting, that I can tell.

I was thinking of naming it Chu-Chi but I am not sure. My friends say dont name it Princess because it is to common and if you go into a park and call your dog a bunch of cats and dogs will come.( I think they were joking though). Im also thinking of naming it Diamond or Cinnamon but I like Chu-Chi best.

Maybe I should have been more specific.

This dog is a German Shepherd, belongs to my son and is a military police dog. Has been trained by my son as a military police dog since my son is an MP.
I’m just keeping him for now since my son had to be deployed to Iraq.

The dog it’s kept in my back yard with in a 6 foot fence.

So technical specking is a military property since his a military dog.

I have never had any problems with my dog having fleas. Over the past 2 weeks it has rained almost every day some of which has caused flash flooding. Our townhome sits on the bank of a creek and our dog goes out to a grassy area around our complex. We suddenly notice a few nights ago that he had a few fleas on him. We gave hime a flea bath, but an hour later he was covered in fleas again. I've treated the house and throughly cleaned the floors and his beading but we still find a cuople on him every now and then. It's not as bad, but a few still show up here and there. Is this suddn outbreak with fleas because of the overwhelming amount of rain? I'm in Fort Worth, TX so it normally doesn't rain like this every other day.

I have a medium (about 40 lb) dog and during the day I am at work from about 8-5:30. During this time she has the entire back yard (which is completely fenced), and she has a little pet door which allows her to get into the garage if it rains. I thought it was a pretty good set-up for the dog but some people say it is bad to let a dog roam in your yard unattended. What is your opinion?
