Most dogs have the natural ability to guard his or her environment, concentrate on his/her obedience and social training the dog will be better for it and you will find it better for your self as well, nothing beats a well trained German Shepherd with a good handler. Unless you have had training experience with dogs get your self into a training club to give you all the help and advice needed.Remember new laws out you are not allowed to let any dog bite even on your own property.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMSdd
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Albert I hope you're rich because a guard dog will cost you so much money it's scary.
1. Liability for bites - to you, your children and your friends. Even if it's a bad guy - your guard dog will cause liability problems in some communities.
2. It will be impossible (or too expensive) to get home owner's insurance because of a "guard dog." And even if you get rid of the dog - you'll have difficulty getting home owner's insurance.
3. You will have to spend daily time training the dog, walking the dog, telling people to leave the dog alone, etc. etc. And again, even if you tell your neighbor's bratty nasty kid to leave dog alone, and he doesn't and gets bitten - you're the one in trouble.
No. A guard dog is too much trouble. Go play with nitroglycerin on a trampoline. Just about as smart.
Of course, if you WANT to be a social pariah...
Now, if you want a companion, friend, pet, loving member of your family - by all means get the shepherd. They're wonderful dogs. Smart, easily trained in obedience, loving, loyal, happy, playful, gentle with children - a shepherd is a joy to own.
And I would recommend obedience training - as in a class - for all dog owners, regardless of breed.
but if you want a guard dog - you're MUCH MUCH better off buying an expensive alarm system for your home - one that calls the police etc. in emergencies. Don't get a guard dog.
Besides, with the alarm system, insurance premiums often go down.

here is another option you might want to consider....Schutzhund training. there are plenty of Shutzhund clubs around the country. and you also might want to go visit them before you purchase your pup...they can offer you alot of good information about the training and purchasing of a pup and what line of GSD would work the best. (if you are not aware of it...there are three lines of GSD's: German, American, and European or Czech lines)

http://leerburg.com/ is a great website. But you don;t realy need to train a german shepard that. They are born to be gaurddogs already and they are rated number 2 in good with childern (means usually good with childern) Any dog can be good with childern if they are raised with them.
