I know I sound really stupid, but I'm flying and we are hiring a moving company to move our cars and other items. My husband says that the dogs can go on a plane, but they are kept in the same area as the luggage. That just seems mean! Is this true, have you done it, do you know of an alternative way for them to travel?

Ok, we did it from Florida to Pennsylvania with two dogs (boxer and lab) in the middle of August so I know your pain...
If you can afford to pay to have them flown, its probably worth it...however, its VERY expensive.
Option 2: If you choose to drive...there are several rest stops that are "dog friendly" as well as hotel accomodations across the coutry that will accept pets. Reputable ones too like Holiday Inn Express Etc. Mosdt charge a small deposit (less than 50 bucks) but you usually get it back.
If you drive, stop often and make sure your pets are EXTREMELY comfortable...a sleeping dog is much easier to drive with than one who is trying to sit on your lap on route 95.
Also-stop to eat, dont even try to eat-N-drive with pets.
For more information on pet-friendly hotels and stuff, visit my webpage at http://www.planet-boxer.com
Good Luck!

Well if one of you are technically blind then you can take the dogs on the plane with you especially since one will be your seeing eye dog.
How far are you moving and how long do you have to get across the country? You could always drive across the country and take your dogs with you in the car, should only take you 3 to 5 days to drive depending how long you drive per day and how many stops you need to make to let your dogs to do thier business.

If you can't drive the pets yourself, then do some research on the Internet. There are companies who will relocate, drive the pets for you. I think www.PetRelocation.com is one of them but it is always best to drive them yourself even if is across the country. It will be less stressful for your pet if they are with you. I drove my 3 cats when I moved from Miami to Atlanta a couple of months ago. It was very stressful for them. They did not eat or even drink water along the way but at least we were together.

If it were me, and I had the choice, I'd drive my own pets. I am leery of flying my animals, especially during hot summer months or cold winter months. Many animals are highly stressed being placed in cargo holds and the airlines don't have a great record for caring for animals. There have been lost animals and deaths.
There are companies that will transport animals for you, but this may require some research to find a good one.

Be careful putting the dogs on the plane. This may interest you and your husband: One of you should drive the dogs across the country. There are special airline that will accommodate dogs. AKC.org may have information on transporting your dogs across country. Go to their website and/or call them: akc.org

Airlines will not fly certain breeds of dog, and they do not fly pets in the summer months.
You can hire movers that specifically transport pets. It's pricey, but depending on your pets and when you are moving it may be the best option.

It kind of depends how long you've had them.
1 day-2 months: I would give them away to anyone
3 months-6 months: I would give them to a pet shelter
7 months-1 year: I would give them to a good friend
2 years or more: If you have a lot then I would put them in cages and set them in the back with your stuff. If you have 1-3 I would let them roam in the back w/ you and your family.
