Can you train a dog to like getting in the water i.e. baths, swimming pools, etc. ?

I thought maybe with repetition a could teach my dog to actually jump into the bath tub without a lot of coercion. What do you think?

That really depends on why the dog does not like water. Is it afraid of water? If the dog just doesn't like being wet you can train it to tolerate water and maybe even like it. any training would involve getting the dog to get wet without any coercion. Introduce it to water when the dog is enjoying something else. Require the dog to have to step into shallow, 1 inch deep water, to get to something that it wants. See how it reacts, if doesn't mind then introduce more water.

With training you can teach a dog anything. With my dogs Golden Retrievers, they both love to swim. I have a pool and they too Willl swim in the pool under my supervision. My pool area is also fenced and gated which by my towns ordnance's is the law. When I leave the pool they do also. At the ocean I keep a 25 foot lead on them so they don't swim out to far. I think this is all common sense stuff. To keep your dog safe.
As far as the bath, I have one dog who wil jump right into the tub without hesitation the other one needs a bit of coxing. Both know to stay in the tub there is no fighting with me until the bath is done and I say they can leave. Yes it is all in the training.
Good luck!

LMBO - not ALL labs are water canines. Our Keno hates water. She hates rain. and he or she does not swim. she would be waiting to at times walk out deep sufficient to get a stick provided that 4 ft are on the backside of the river. yet swim????? She seems at you like you're completely nutz. you will be able to desire to work out what occurs by potential of filling a sprint one pool up a million/2 way with water and placed toys in there and supervise the play.

Yes. At the very least, you can get your dog to tolerate the bathtub. Make sure you praise the dog for being good in the bath. Be patient - good luck!

I wouldn't train a dog to like water because when they do, they will love it with a passion that overhides your authority. For instance, many dogs who LOVE water will jump into a pool any chance they get anywhere anytime without your consent and will only get out if it wants to. Unbeknownst to them, if a dog swims in a pool for long hours, they may have their intestines may be twisted which results in death most of the time.

If the dog hates the bath, its usually just going to hate the bath.
For instance, my dog hates baths and never will like them.
