the dog was in your care, therefore you are responsible.
animal control may take the dog. the cat owners can sue you for damages, hopefully its not some expensive pure bred cat!

If your dog was out of your yard, and you are reported, you can be fined for the fact that your dog was off of your property. (He may be your son's dog, but while he is gone, you are the legal owner.)
If the cat was off it's property, and there are laws pertaining to the containment of cats in your area, then that owner can also be fined for the cat being off of it's property.
If you know the owner, then it would be right to tell him what happened, IF you saw the dog actually kill the cat. If you are speculating, and did not see the dog catch and kill the cat, then there is now way to know this dog did it, unless there were other witnesses.

It all depends on where the cat got nailed If the cat was running loose that takes the liability off you . If it was tied up in the owners yard you have a problem.

It does not matter. It is still a dog in your care. As the (temporary) owner it was your responsibility to ensure that the dog stayed on your property. The owners of the cat could sue for the price they paid for their cat (if they paid for it).

The dog was in your care, so you are responsible for him. If the cat had owners, you should tell them what happened. You may be responsible for making reparations. You are definitely responsible regardless of who trained the dog.

Is the cat a stray? Is s/he owned? Do you know the owner? Did the dog kill the cat on your property, or elsewhere? Too many differentials....

That's all fine and dandy, but if you know who's cat it is, it's still your responsibility to tell them!
