The shelter chose Heidi for her name on the ID card. Apparently she's only had that name for the past week. I thought of Doxie on the way home, but that might not be creative enough since that's the abbreviation for the breed. Heidi seems pretty good, but I think it's overused for female dachshunds. After some research, I found these nice names: Dottie, Gracie, Emma, Gertie, Lotte, Sofie. (As you can see, I prefer shorter easier names.) Which one gets your vote or do you have other ideas for a name? Thanks.

I have already asked a question about having my neighbor feeding the foxes in my neighborhood last week (i know i should call someone so she can stop before they hurt her or anything else but she is out of town and there is nothing i can do). Anywhoo... my neighbor has been feeding foxes but even though she is out of town i am very worried about my next door neighbor's dog and my dog. They have been barking a lot lately and whe we go to check on them i notice the foxes are longing around very close. but then they see me and run. I don't know how to handel this because this whole thing with my neighbor feeding foxes is a real mess no.
1) they have had a litter of foxes
2) they are getting very close to other neighbors, dogs, and other things on this street.

Help? what should i do? I want the foxes gone, so i can relax and not worry about my dogs being bitten. and i think my neighbors dog has already gotten into a fight with them because her dog has a gash on his nose.

My dog is only 4 years old and just 2 weeks ago diagnosed with kidney failure and almost died. It was 3800 and alot of time and frustration. Luckily she is fine, but it doesnt make any sense.... how can i tell if it is from any of the dog food that was tainted... i change her food often... i asked the vet and they said "oh no" before i even finished my sentenced. It just seemed fishy...
any suggestions of what to do and how to do it??

I have a 6 week old Chiuhaha that is 1.25 lbs. I was putting on her sweater and she was wrestling me, and she wrestled her way right off the couch. She fell, but didnt yipe. I pressed everywhere on her body to see if she yiped (to see if hurt her) but she didnt. She rely hasn't wined since. I think she is scared, but she is walking fine, not limping, but im a nervous wreck. Currently she is just sleeping in her crate. Do you think she is okay? What should I do? What should I watch for? Please help me!

I got bitten by a dog on the hand at the animal shelter this afternoon cause I sort of ended up in the middle of a fight. The workers said that they were pretty sure it had it's Rabies, and I know I've had a Tetnus. My fingers are just kind of sore, but one of them I can't extend all the way inwards or outwards. Should I just wait to see if it feels better after awhile? And suggestions overall.. besides not to get inbetween dogs, lol.

HI, I live in the countryside and have a confident 4yrold dacshund and a nervous 10yrold labrador. He has always been nervous (of male dogs, bangs, thunder), but has been fine in this area (lived here 3yrs) where we walk out straight into a private field, no other dogs.

Recently he has been refusing to go for a walk, he is to terrified to go out the front door, he cries, drools, and runs away. I can't see any change (except the seasons) and my other one is fine.
When I can persuade him to come he is fine too, but he usually won't, he is not off his food or anything. Problem is he will only do his business on the walks, not in the garden, I am afraid he will bust something.

The vet won't help and I can't get a dog shrink. Please help because he is my lovely, gorgeous, stubborn old weirdo!

thanks

I adopted a 4 year old collie a little over a week ago. She is very sweet and very calm. A little too calm. She doesn't seem to have any enthusiasm for anything. I have to spell the word W A L K or my other dogs go nuts. My new girl will come with and has learned to heal quit will but seem indifferent about the whole thing. I praise her when she does something right, but she acts like she can take it or leave it. I tried giving her a treat and she spit it out.

I'm not sure if it is a collie thing or a rescued dog thing or just a Roxie thing.

Any thoughts?

We had a 7 week old female german shepherd who was the runt of the litter but seemed to be catching up fine. She was sick for a week when they were about 3 weeks old and we had just taken her to the vet last week and she was fine. This morning she was ok and ate and drank and everything....we were gone today and when we got home this evening she was dead. Could it just have been something she was born with? And if so why did it take her so long to die.....or why didnt the vet know there was something wrong with her last week? Or was it maybe heartworms....? I have no idea because like I said she has been fine lately...we didnt expect it at all. Has anyone had an experience like this??

I have a rat terrier who is displaying some strange behavior. This started two days ago out of nowhere. She wont jump on the bed and she shakes a bit. She hasnt eaten anything that my older rat terrier hasnt had and she is only 2 yrs old. I have been the only one handling her and she is physically fine from the exterior. She goes outside and kinda crys a bit and backs up, like walking backward. She will then sit down or lie down on the ground. She seems ok sometimes and she occasionally plays with her toys. She is ok one minute and seems uneasy the next. She sleeps in the bed with me and seemed to have slept fine last night. She was acting odd again about 10 min after gettting up this morning. She is now lying on the bed with my other dog and is fine. Just lying there content. No shaking, no issues. She has been eating a little bit and is still using the bathroom with no diarreah. I would like an answer to this if anyone has an idea. I am traveling out of town and dont have a vet here.

As my puppy search continues, I've been perusing various humane society and rescue group websites. There are certain breeds (pits, rotts) that I'm not interested in at all, and I'm worried about how these groups label their pets in order to move them easier.

So my basic question(s) is this: what are the rules for such labels? Do these groups try to err on the side of adoptability when calculating and advertising breeds? And if so, what are the typical substitutions just so I can be aware?

Here's an example: http://www.bvhumane.org/listman/listings/images/21_1.jpg

Not just interested in this wee one (more the general practice), but she's advertised as a lab/chow mix.

What do you think?

Thanks, in advance, for your consideration.

I have a jack russell terrior. Her name is Gwen. She is a very energetic and loving dog. She's a year old. Usually she likes to sit downstairs with me and my bf. She's acting wierd now. she wont come downstairs and if she does she will just stay at the bottom of the stairs. She will not go in the living room for anything. I closed my room door,( because thats where she wants to stay) So now she just sits at the top of the stairs. I dont know what to do???? should I take her to the vet?

I know many people swear by schedule feeding their dogs but is it really necessary? Does schedule feeding have such great benefits that open feeding does not? I was schedule feeding my pup but it got so frustrating because I'd have to go to work and find someone to feed her. Also she tends not to want to eat right when I put the food down anymore which makes me feel nervous/guilty so I leave the food out anyway. I was thinking of switching to open feed with the exception of taking the food away at night so she doesn't have to go to the washroom in the middle of the night. Is that fine for a puppy? Thanks!!

Okay so heres the deal. I have an 8 week old great dane puppy. He's been on heart worm medicine since he was born because the mother tested postitive for heart worms.

earlier today i noticed there was a small white worm in his poop. he doesn't have worms hanging out of his butt and the worm was not alive. i'm told this is NOT the heart worms coming out. this is an intestinal worm. My vet is not open on weekends.

so my question is this. they have OTC de-wormer for puppies. as long as the pup is over 6 weeks it can be used. but is it safe to be giving my puppy both heart dewormer and regular dewormer at the same time?

We just rescued a 2YO Female Affen. She will NOT eat dog food, only our food. She does not beg, but sits quietly to watch us eat and then runs to her bowl. The Vet suggested different foods, but so far they are just a waste of our money. She is truly a sweet dog and we are having difficulty not giving in to the sad eyes (OK, I am having difficulties - my husband and sons are fine).

Thanks for any help you can offer!!!
