We had a 7 week old female german shepherd who was the runt of the litter but seemed to be catching up fine. She was sick for a week when they were about 3 weeks old and we had just taken her to the vet last week and she was fine. This morning she was ok and ate and drank and everything....we were gone today and when we got home this evening she was dead. Could it just have been something she was born with? And if so why did it take her so long to die.....or why didnt the vet know there was something wrong with her last week? Or was it maybe heartworms....? I have no idea because like I said she has been fine lately...we didnt expect it at all. Has anyone had an experience like this??

If she was inside and died, then my guess would be that she had a heart defect that she was born with. It's not unusual for something like this to go undetected, sometimes you can't find it without specifically looking for it, and you wouldn't look unless you had a reason to suspect a problem. If the dog was outside then I'd suspect all of the above as well as poisoning, either accidental or intentional.

it was not heartworms. heartworms take 6 months to infect a dog, a 7 week old puppy will not have heartworms. not knowing what your puppy was sick with initially, it is hard to say if that had anything to do with her dying. it is possible she had a congenital defect. any number of things can cause death in puppies. lets say she did not have any symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite); there is a thing called fading puppy syndrome which is much like sids in babies. you can have a seemingly healthy puppy or kitten for that matter and then the next day or hour they can be dead. generally it is more likely to happen with the "runt" it can also happen to any of the others in the litter. if it were from corona, parvo, distemper, intestinal parasites, fleas, poisoning, etc there would have been outward signs. sorry for your loss.

It probably was a congenital condition she was born with, a heart defect most likely, or an arterial weakness that resulted in a burst aneurism. It was not heartworms, since heartworms take a minimum of six months to reach maturity and travel to the heart and lungs, and it normally takes at least a few years for them to become so numerous as to be life-threatening, and that is according to my vet. The fact that this pup was sick a few weeks ago, but the other pups weren't, indicates that there was something wrong from the start.

Has she been eating any of the recalled dogfoods?
Heartworms aren't going to kill a puppy that quickly.
She had been tested for worms / parasites?
What was she sick with when she was 3 weeks old?

The only thing I have heard that sounded similiar to that was a guy who lost a puppy that was 10 weeks old. They found after doing testing that the puppy was bit by a poisonous spider... Got anything like that in your area?

If the vet did not detect anything wrong then how can anyone else? I understand your frustration and lose but I guarantee you will not get any good answers here. The fact that the puppy was in poor health at three weeks of age is a big clue.

well, if you have taken a walk with her, she might have got the corona of the parvo virus. There is alot of more viruses that could have been the result of her death. No, it shouldnt be a reson of birth. you see, A dogs immune system doesnt get strong enough to defend viruses without vaccination. And Your dog should have gotten her corona when she is 3 weeks, 7 weeks. And the parvo too.

Distemper??? My brother had a puppy that died from it. My neighbor too. If so, it can stay in the soil for a long time and will kill any other puppies if they are not immunized for it. talk to your vet about it. I have heard that disinfecting the area with bleach can help.

yes, its hard to let them go, but yes, it happens, you think boy their going to be great dogs when they get bigger only they just don't get the chance to grow, and who knows why it happens, but it does, thats why their called runts of the litter sometimes they make it to adulthood and sometime there's something thats just not right and they dieor if they do live it one vet bill to another vet bill until they do get sick enough to die a miserable death, so Thank-god it didnt suffer.

I know how you feel. When I was sick my dog was killed. He had bone cancer. No one knew till his bones stuck out of his skin.It could have ate chocolate. That makes a dogs blood pressure go up so high it kills them or he could have died from something he was born with.
