I think a lot of it is instincts. I have a deaf dog and half the time she is the quietest and the other half she is the loudest dog ever. It appears that instincts is what plays the biggest part in it. However, the deaf factor comes into play when she is barking/ making noise because that is when she no longer even sounds like a dog.
Sorry I 'm not more help. I have wondered that also.

Because he is deaf and not a Mala-mute. Sorry, could not resist that, did not to be rude. He does know he is barking and he's vibrating those little vocal chords like a needle on a seismometer. He also realizes he can alert you to possible danger or the postman by barking. He's either seen something, felt a strange car approaching or even your neighborhood peeping Tom came to his attention. Your dog is delightfully normal just like a hearing impaired person is, just has a handicap is all. Blind dogs bark too because they can hear and bite a burglar or smell a fire. Have you trained him to respond to hand signals? You can, you know. Friend of mine had an old white poodle deaf as a post and you would never know it from her behavior except that she couldn't hear your call but would go get her leash for a walk if you gave her the proper hand signals.

It's natural. Just because he can't hear doesn't mean he can't bark. Barking is a dog's natural way of protecting itself and others around it. He can't hear it, but he knows he's barking. That's like saying why can a deaf human talk? Well, just because they're deaf doesn't debilitate their ability to talk.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aUO17
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Unless he was deaf all of his life barking comes natural for him becuase he is used to doing it. It isn't like humans with talking where we have to hear words to properly pronounce them, a bark is just a bark.

Of corse he knows he's barking...lol. Have you ever heard a deaf person speak? They know that they are even if they are completely deaf, they can feel the vibrations in their throats, just like your poochie. Encourage him to bark.

I have a deaf ferret that makes a LOT of noise...does he know he's doing it, probably not, but he likes it...
Your dog might smell something or someone he doesn't like or feel something...so he barks..

What if he isn't reallly deaf, are you 100 percent positive? Well if he is deaf he probably barks because its in his instincts, like Helen Keller was deaf and blind but she could mumble

Why wouldn't he... Deaf people talk in many cases..
He knows what he is saying, he just doesn't know if anyone is answering back. Although he might feel vibrations in the air, and know something... Hard to say. But he is likely trying to let you know something.
