Dogs - March 2007

I have an American boxer. He is totally white and has short hair so you can see his pink skin (alot in some areas) . It is starting to get hot and I am worried about him getting sun burned. I am not sure if i can put sun block on him? Will he get sick if he starts licking it off? I cant just bring him inside during the day because I work. And I want to take him to the river with me this summer.
Any suggestions?

i have a mongrel dog,its mother is border collie,not sure what the father is but he looks like a jack russell/whippet with long legs,the back end of him is quite skinny,how much shud i feed him everyday,and what food would you recommend?he is 15 mths old.any tips for training him to not be so excited when people come to visit thanks

Ok here it is. I just got back from the vet and the test came back positive. The told me that even though it came back positive it was very low meaning this is the earliest of stages. My question is "Now what?" Obviously I am aware that she needs treatment but what should I be looking out for? How muc is this going to cost? I'll do what it takes but I need HELP what do I do?

She's been pregnant for a while now, and just a few minutes ago my sister and I were sitting on the floor and my dog was on the couch when she just randomly let out what sounded like a bark of pain, jumped off the couch, and started breathing extremely hard... then she was normal again... was that a contraction? he has a bald looking belly bald skin going down his leg and on the tip of his tail all on one side of his body what could it be? i know its not mange.i feed him and gave him water his ribs are showing and other bones i cant call the pound because there known to put pits to sleep.

My 18 week old Bichon puppy went to the groomer for the first time yesterday. He was there for about 5.5 hours. He was able to take a little nap when he got home in the mid-afternoon, but then we were off to puppy training class for an hour at night. So it was a big and busy day for him.

So today, he has done nothing but sleep! (We did go to the park for about 30 minutes to just get out and about and then he just came home and crashed again.)

Just looking to see if any other owners have had similar situations with their puppy after a "big" day and/or going to the groomer for the first time?

Hi, my Chihuahua, just had two new pups. Thing is I know there is Parvo in my area, and I have another pet about due to have more puppies.

Right now they are inside, but I need to know what I can do to ward of Parvo, while they get old enough to get their shots. Any ideas? Would an anti-bacteria-microbrial spray help?

We live in Pennslyvania and I have no idea what to do with him! I don't want to call animal control because I'm scared they'll take him away! Can't they just check if he's healthy so we can quickly just post flyers for him?

someone said to my mom that the rottweiler is a mix between a dobermann and another dog and that because of this the brain of the rottweiler tends to grow which causes the dog to become crazy and dangerous. this sounds like a big load of bull.

is it true that rottweilers have a tendency to betray their owners?

I want to adopt a cockapoo. I was thinking of going to a breeder but I thought maybe I should try a local shelter. I found out that I have to fill out a application and wait for it to be reviewed, then they will call my landlord, then a they have to do a home visit. Does anyone else think this is a little invasive? I understand the need to make sure the animals go to good homes, but what's next are they going to call my employer...oh wait they probably are.

i have an 8yr-old long hair spayed doxie and she's the cutest thing ever! last thurs, i noticed she was licking her butt area excessively, and i looked at it, the hair there were clumped together in couple spots. i didnt pay too much attention to it since she licks herself from time to time. The next day i came home from work and saw alot of blood spots all over my living/dining room carpet, mostly very small spots like fingertips, with 2 larger ones like the size of a thumb. she was licking her butt alot again and i can smell the blood in her breath. She also pees on newspapers when we r not home, i saw small puddles of dried urine on newspaper with diluted blood stains. it happened on friday, so i wanted to wait until monday, if she's still bleeding then i would take her to the vet. But by monday, she's back to normal. no more bleeding but w/ occasional licking down there. I couldnt tell if it's from the #2 or #1 area.does anyone know what that was?should i still take her to the vet?

I am took my 11 yr. old cat to a new vet. He said the cat needs his teeth cleaned. There is brown tartar built up on the teeth. Is this a common practice now for cats? I though it was hard on cats to be put under for medical procedures unless it is necessary. The vet said the cat can leave bacteria in the water it is drinking and then it can travel to the kidneys and affect the bladder. (I don't know if I'm explaining it quite right). He also said my dog that shares the same water could have the same problem by drinking the water. I'm wondering if this new vet is just looking for work or giving me good advice concerning my pets?
