My 18 week old Bichon puppy went to the groomer for the first time yesterday. He was there for about 5.5 hours. He was able to take a little nap when he got home in the mid-afternoon, but then we were off to puppy training class for an hour at night. So it was a big and busy day for him.

So today, he has done nothing but sleep! (We did go to the park for about 30 minutes to just get out and about and then he just came home and crashed again.)

Just looking to see if any other owners have had similar situations with their puppy after a "big" day and/or going to the groomer for the first time?

Thanks!

Nope, no recalled foods - we made sure of that right away!

He might be having a bit of a growth spurt which could make him tired, and that was a lot of activity. If he's not looking better in a day, take him to the vet. You're not feeding him any of the recalled foods are you?

Are you certain the groomers didn't give him a pill to calm down? Some groomers do this but they are suppose to ok it with the owner.
More than likely he is just restoring his energy after like you said "a big day". Unless he has eaten some of the recalled Menu brands of food, I wouldn't be worried at this point but would keep an eye on him just in case he doesn't perk up soon.

Hi
I breed groom and treat bichons as well as other animals , I can assure you this is normal. A pup at that age will sleep on average 75% of its time, its building muscle and strong bones, some at that age havent fused yet so they do need as much sleep as possible.
Grooming is a very traumatic and unnatural procedure for any doggy but at that age its very stressful and as such he or she will sleep for a long time afterwards, the driers are hot and the pup isnt sued to this, trust me it will get better.

I know that most groomers require vaccinations prior to appt. But, does he have his vaccinations? Sleepiness (lethargy) is one of the symptoms of parvovirus. Watch him, and if he starts vomiting get her to a vet immediately! So, if he is fully vaccinated there should be no worries, and he could just be worn out.

don't think you have anything to worry about at all! the first time my dog went to daycare, he would barely get off the couch for two days! that one whole day of non stop playing wiped him out like i've never seen before. now, he's usually only tired at night after i pick him up, but then he peps back up.

a day at the groomer always wears out my dogs, and did so when they were puppies too...i always just plan on them being worn out for a day or so after a grooming, not to overwhelm them

You really put him through his paces yesterday. No wonder he's pooped out. He's fine but try not do that gain. He's still a pup and they do need their rest. Too big of a day is really not good and can stress them out.

Your a good mom for asking though!

And keep in mind that small dogs can become hypoglycemic after stress so try giving him a little honey, or vitacal if you have it, and see if that doesn't pep him up. Our Chihuahua does this regularly, and she's 3 years old.

Well he definitely had a big day! ;)

I know that whenever my 5year old cousin comes over to my house she will spend the ENTIRE day running and playing around with my 3month old Yorkie pup. By the time she leaves, the poor thing hops onto her doggy bed and drifts to sleep! Cutest darn thing.

It's normal...
Remember, a tired puppy is a good puppy.

They stay out of trouble that way. Bichons can be devious.
