Basenjis need to be raised with kids to be good with them. They also should have lots of socializing when they're young. They're very intelligent, but somewhat independent (like most hounds), which means they can be a challenge. They're very active, excellent climbers and can get destructive if they're bored. They can make really good family dogs provided they're given the time, attention and training they need. The kids in the family have to be taught how to treat a dog with respect, too.

Yes, if your kids are respectful. Basenjis can grow skiddish quickly in an environment that's too chaotic.

They are usually patient, but do best with older considerate children.
