First thing, as an American Pitbull Terrier breeder, there is no such thing as a " blue-nosed" pit bull. It's just called a blue pit bull. But you are looking at a case of demadex mange which is extreemly common in all bully breeds. It is usually brought on by stress, which this dog has had it's share of. The vet will confirm it to be true. Also a high quality diet will help fight it off. May I recommend Nutro, lamb and rice formula. And yes saddly the shelter will most likely put him down. Keep him. They are wonderful pets.

Depending on where you live, the dog can be put to sleep just because of the breed and regardless of temperament. In my city, Houston TX, if you take a dog to the Humane Society or SPCA and it is suspected of being Pit Bull type dog or mix, the dog will be put to sleep. So I understand your concern there!
If possible, could you take this dog to a Vet to determine how to treat it and to get shots for it and get his health checked? Some Vets will work with people who are fostering strays, especially if you already have animals and a regular Vet.
Otherwise, you might find out if there is a low cost clinic in your area where you can get the dog checked out.
Poor thing! You're great for feeding him and caring for him. Hope somehow you can foster him until you can find him a good home.
The other possiblity is to contact people here and find out about rescue orgs in your area who might be able to take him:

do not take him to the pound! here, where i live i have taken and know others that have taken pit bulls and pit bull type dogs to the pound, none of which showed any aggression towards people or dogs, and they were all put to sleep due to their breed and that alone. i called the shelter every day to check on them and they claimed that they were euthanized becuase they "could not cope with kennel life" most shelters would rather destroy a pit than even give it a chance. take it to a vet, and then try to give it away yourself. that way you can be more sure that it goes to a good home.

I wish I could be so lucky to find a cute pit bull puppy at my door step. The balding could be anything. It could be demodex mites, ringworm, poor nutrition... It would be best to take him to the vet to get him checked out. And thank you for not taking him to the pound. I think, if you want the puppy, you should keep him. If not, you can try looking for a home for him yourself, or ask vet clinics if they will take him, and adopt him out. Or you can ask if they know of any animal rescue groups that will take him and adopt him out. Good Luck, he was lucky to wander to someone who cares!

Thank you for taking this starving dog in, but... If you haven't taken the dog to a vet how do you know it's not mange? Lack of nutrition , allergic reations to flea bites, and "color dilution alopecia" can also cause hair loss, but you won't know for sure what the dog's health issues are until you get this dog the medical attention it needs. Do better by this dog than its previous owners did and get it to a vet.

Take him straight to the vet. He sounds as though he was neglected and may have a problem chewing at himself, which is common in pit-bulls, that have been ignored and left alone.
You take real good care of him, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
Good Luck!

Take him to the veterinarian.
Unfortunately the pups sounds like he has been badly neglected. Obviously his owner is not fit to care for him. Good luck! Pits are wonderful dogs. :)

if you were in NC I would take him..but as far as the bald spots..I would reccommend Happy Jacks Mange medicine..even if he doesnt have mange...you rub this stuff on them once a day and it helps the skin heal from whatever it had/has and helps the hair grow back..also put some type of pet friendly lotion on the area and keep him from licking the areas.

my puppy had mange when we got her. She was malnourished, and this lowers their immune system --thus, they can get mange easily.
I would make an appointment with a vet asap. She / he will also be able to advise you on what to do with the found puppy

Might just be from lack of nutrition, or an allergy.
Check Petfinder.com for local no-kill rescues that might be able to help you find a SUITABLE home for this wonderful pup. Consider fostering, as well, since that'll help out his chances, if he has to go to a shelter that isn't no-kill.
