First, have the test repeated. False positives have been know to occur.
Next, discuss the pros and cons of the heartworm treatment. Ask your vet about just using Heartgard monthly or even twice monthly.
Another thought is Ambertech. They have a holistic product for heartworm. http://www.ambertech.com I've read a lot about it in the Yahoo Groups and they say that it works.

Call vet and get info for how much and treatment. Have a vet give treatment. To help prevent this, cleanup around the house (outside), remove all pools of water, get a pet safe insect killer and spread/spay around house. I used one that cost 5 bucks and works great.
Treatment for heartworm is not without some risk. Bloods tests are used to assess kidney and liver function before initiating treatment. The worms are killed slowly, so as not to cause a sudden blockage in the heart or lungs, and the patient must be kept quiet. The next phase is medication to kill the remaining microfilariae.

Your vet should have answered those questions, in light of the positive heartworm test....I can't believe that he/she sent you home with no information about what to do. Call the vet back and ask what the options are and how much it will cost.

I would have thought that your veterinarian would have answered these questions for you and given you a step by step process with regard to treatment etc., along with the cost. I would definately give them a call tomorrow and schedule some time to go into the office and discuss your questions and concerns. Good luck and God Bless you and your dog.

You need to ask your vet the same questions that you just asked here, and then set up an appointment for treatment. Heart worms can be fatal if left unattended.

These are all questions that you should have either asked the vet, or the vet should have advised you of. Only a veterinarian can give you these answers, and I think you should call the same vet back and see what he says about it.
