I have an American boxer. He is totally white and has short hair so you can see his pink skin (alot in some areas) . It is starting to get hot and I am worried about him getting sun burned. I am not sure if i can put sun block on him? Will he get sick if he starts licking it off? I cant just bring him inside during the day because I work. And I want to take him to the river with me this summer.
Any suggestions?

You can use sunblock and it's a good idea. Since you will putting it on his back and head, mostly, he won't be able to reach those areas to lick it off. So you will be safe. I've never heard of any dog getting sick from licking it off and a lot of my groom clients use it on their dogs every summer.

Provide him with shade. Don't worry about sun burn if the dog has access to shade-he will not burn. if you lock him up in a pen out in the sun-then he may burn, don't do that.

if you are worried, ask your vet if there is something for that. dogs are pretty smart, they know when to get out of the sun, not like us humans who worship the tan.
