We live in Pennslyvania and I have no idea what to do with him! I don't want to call animal control because I'm scared they'll take him away! Can't they just check if he's healthy so we can quickly just post flyers for him?

Since the dog is wearing a collar, it's fair to say that he has an owner (that will hopefully be looking for him!). You can either call a shelter or animal control to care for the dog while they wait for an owner to claim him. If you're wanting to keep him until the owner is found...you could take him to the vet to check if he's healthy (like you said you wanted to do), but of course you will need to pay the bill out of your pocket.

Call and ask your local shelters or kennels about what can be done. Personally, I would shell out the vet fee and keep the dog with me until the owner is found. You could always ask the owner to reimburse you for the vet fees once you find them!

It would be great if you can take care of him while you search for the owners. There's nothing wrong with that, in fact, you are doing animal shelters a favor, because that way they will have one more space to help another dog. Also, the owners will appreciate it to know that a caring person looked after the dog while it was lost.
If you are worried about his health, then call them and ask if they will do a check up. I don't think they will unless you let the dog stay at their shelter (because otherwise someone could just con them into getting free vet checks!), but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Even if they won't do a vet check, most shelters will take a picture or take down info of the dog so that if someone comes to the shelter looking for their dog, they can direct them to you. Make sure to give your contact info to all your local shelters in case the dog's owners look for the dog at the shelters. If you call them and tell them about the dog, they can't force you to bring him in. They are legally unable to do that.

take him to the vet first and see if he has an rfid tag they are really popualr now a days and only cost 25-50 dollars to have put on your dog and can be read by vets animal shelters and animal control to tell the adress phone number and name of the owner so try this first you might save your self alot of time and money if not post flyers as i doubt he wondered very far if that fails then try news-ad and then last and least either keep him give him away or give him to the shelter as i do look there as well when i lose a pet (not that it happens that often) but it has so yea thats how i usally deal with it

Call Animal Control and report the "found dog" so they can check it against their "lost dog" reports. Tell them you will keep the dog until its owners can be located and Animal Control will usually allow you to do this. (They'd rather NOT bring the dog into the pound.)

Call your local vet offices and hospitals to see if anyone has reported the dog missing, and if they have scanners that can look for microchips in the dog. Then go ahead with your intention to post "found dog" flyers around the area. (Putting flyers up in shopping malls and schools is always helpful.)

Post flyers,,check your local paper to see if there is an ad for a "lost dog"...keep her/him safe and fed until you can decide what to do. Check with your vet..sometimes vets will give you a break on $ when they know you have found and or trying to take in a stray. Someone is missing this animal..unless they are just so inhumane as to "drop" it off. Good Luck..I hope you decide to keep the dog.

Take him to a local vet, and have him scanned for a microchip (it's free!) They'll contact the owners, if the dog has a microchip.

If you're able to provide shelter for him, take care of him, and put up ''Found Dog'' flyers (providing minimum information, to insure that the person who calls, is the owner. Have them describe the color of the collar & special markings on the dog, if any.).

You can also post an ad on Craigslist.org and Petfinder.com (http://www.petfinder.com/post/post.cgi?action=2&type=F)

Lots of dogs are microchipped now. Call a local shelter or a vet to see if you can have the dog scanned for one. I don't think they'll charge you anything for it. If that doesn't work, put up some flyers.

Yeah you could post flyer's.
But what you really need to do is take him to the vet to see if he has one of those micro-ID-chips implanted in his neck. Then if he does, the owner(s) will be so glad to have him back!

I know if you're connected to a dog, it's hard to see them go but, if you and the owner(s) become friends, look on the bright side!!!!

you can contact your local shelter, where in penn. i am from the shelters do not take the dog from you unless you pay them to due to funding and people just claiming they are strays so as to fork the food cost etc on the shelters, but they do have lost/found list. when we lost our dog the next day i called 3 local shelters and put in the information, they asked if they could give my number to any callers having dogs matching her description within 6 hours a lady from next town over called to say she thought she had my dog, half hour later our sweetie was home with us.

Put an add in the paper and post some flyers yourself. Do not call a shelter
