I have a yellow lab, he's almost a year old and he sheds like crazy! There's hair everywhere. I give him baths, which I figure would help but I cna't bathe him everyday. Is there any way to stop the shedding without spending tons of money?

My mother-in-law has two pomeranians who she refuses to leash. Yesterday she decided to walk her dogs and one of her dogs ran into the middle of the street and was killed by a driver who never stopped. My mother-in-law was devasted, but was able to get the drivers plates. She feels she can bring legal action against this person. I told her she can't, because the dog was without a leash. Needless to say she will not listen to me. I don't believe she has any legal grounds to sue this person. I believe she was the negligent one and had she leashed her dog it would never have happened. I just feel she is fighting a lost cause. I do think it is sad the driver never stopped. I just believe nothing can be done am I wrong?

I live in an area that's in the suburbs but has some open space and trails in the neighborhood. I was told by someone that my dog could be taken from my backyard by a hawk or some other animal. Is that true and what do I have to look out for? Do I need to worry about possums and raccoons? What other airborne animals could take him? Can I never let him out in the yard by himself? Is it safe when he gets to be a certain weight? I don't want to lose my little guy.

I know puppies have easily discomforted stomaches but of course I'm a worried owner.
I left to take my fiance to his plane and when I got back my 2 month old pug puppy had pooed on the door of his kennel.
When I took him to go out, he not only pretty much sprayed his "number 2" out but also vomitted in the process of trying to poo more.
He's had another stool and its almost completely solid but I'm still on edge about this.
I don't know if maybe he was just nervous that we left him alone (he hasn't been left alone since we got him) and got an upset belly or if I should take him into the vet.
What do you think?
(I emptied out his water dish and food dish, cleaned them, and restocked them with fresh stuff)

I got a three month old american staff terrier ( sorry i dont spell to good) last thursday from animal welfare. I am worried that he may be sick. All he is doing is sleeping and sleeping bearly playing at all he just lays around no interrest at all. He was throwing up and had diahreha quite bad, also a runny nose with green/yellow snot and his eyes were like draing a mucos.(sp) so i took him to the vet at the A/W but he was not there so a vet tech seen us. They gave us meds for kennel cough and worms. Its been about three days now and he is still just laying around sleeping. He doesnt want to eat nor drink just sleep. He might play for 5min then he is done. he wants to lay back down. Should i take him back to the vet?

I'm not talkin' chipmunks, squirrels and skunks.

We're hoping to take a trip to Canada and we would like to bring our dogs. I'm worried about wildlife though. We plan on staying in a cabin on a lake (hopefully secluded). My dogs have never seen bear, moose or even deer for that matter. I'm not sure that my little JRT would back down from anything.

We're not hunters although we will, of course, have guns with us.

What concerns should we have?

(I'm asking those that have experience with northern wildlife and dogs.)

Our chihuahua is nearly his 2nd birthday and is not fixed. When we got him, we had decided that we might breed him because he was such an excellent dog. This may not have been the brightest idea. About 6 months ago, he started marking things inside the house, barking at every person he saw (he had been socialized constantly growing up), and growling at me when I got too close.

I know there are behavioral issues here that we need to work with (he's never been to classes). However, besides the physical benefits of being neutered, how will getting a 2 year old dog fixed now affect any of the above behavior?

Will it help tame the agressiveness? Will it stop him from marking everything in sight when we aren't looking? He's a very intelligent dog and can be trained, but are there some things that just never go away?

Ok, here are some details about me. I really want a dog, i am thinking a lab. I had a dog previously (well, it was my roommates), that was about 3 years ago. I miss the companion. I am in my mid 20s, have a serious boyfriend. I live in a single family home and have a small to medium sized yard. I do work 5 days a week, 8-6ish, but close enough to go home for lunch. I travel occasionally for vacations, and maybe ever 2-3 months for work for the day. Financially, i can definitely handle the responsibility, I am just curious as to what other people think given some of the details i provided for me getting a new little addition to my home. I do believe in crate training, and would plan on doing so. Any thoughts or feedback?

I have 2. One is a long furred and the other a short hair. They are very loyal, loving & smart. The short hair is almost 3 years old and I got her at 8 weeks old. I had her paper trained within 48 hours. And she has been able to get me to laugh almost everyday. They are both very good looking dogs and always draw attention from people including children when I take them out in public. They are very low maintenance, smart and fun.

A friend lives in a neighborhood with at least three pit bulls similar to her own (varying degrees of white and brown). In Nov., a woman walking her husky (which she walks past my friend's house at least once a day for the past year) was attacked by one of these pit bulls a block from my friend's house. Yes, Sabbath (my friend's dog) barks at this husky, but it's one of those, "Hey! There's a dog! Another Dog! Hey! I want to go for a walk too!" barks. Anywho, law enforcement knocks on my friend's door asking where her dog is, and it was just involved in an attack. So long story short, they took Sabbath, hauled him off to lockup, labeled him a dangerous dog, etc. Here's the thing though. Witnesses say they sprayed the attacking dog with mace. We've seen the pics of the husky that was attacked. No mace or blood on Sabbath, but this woman said it was the one, so off he goes. No one seems worried about getting the dog that really did it.

What do YOU think?
