Finding a small dog is easy. I'm a fan of adopting rescued animals, so you can check your local animal shelter for small dogs, or check out the AKC's website on toy breeds. As for the "easy to take care"...are you sure you want a dog? Animals are not toys. They need to be taken care of just like children. If you are not prepared for that sort of commitment, you may want to reconsider getting a pet. Dogs are considerably more difficult than other pets as well, since they need to be fed and walked every day and cleaned and groomed occassionally. They also require ALOT of attention. If you want an animal that may require less attention, try a cat or a hamster which don't mind being left alone that much. Even still, these require feeding, cleaning cages or litter boxes, training, exercise, attention... This is a life decision you are making, not like buying a new shirt that you can stop wearing once you get bored with it.

Any dog breed needs your attention. I wouldn't say any dog is "easy" to take care of but some are "easier" then others. I've always wanted a small dog and in the process of adopting one right now. I chose a Silky Terrier. They are similar in look to a Yorkie. They shed very little, but you still have to groom them on a regular basis because their hair can mat.
The best way to decide is do some research on small dogs to see what breeds will fit your lifestyle. Look into www.dogbreedinfo.com they give good information about any dog breed. You can type a breed into the search on the page and it will give you all the information you would need to know. If you don't know of breed there is a breed list you can go through. Also on the site there is a quiz to take to narrow down the breed that fits your lifestyle. This is only one site that offers these features, there are plenty more. You could just type in small dog breeds in your search and see what comes up.
Doing research is the best way to find the right breed for you. My boyfriend and I just went through this and it took us a good amount of time before we decided on a Silky Terrier.
Good luck. I hope you find the right dog for you!

I have a miniature Jack Russell. She is very smart, and I paper trained her, so if I'm working long hours she can go on the paper. She is full grown now, and only weighs about 5 pounds. What a delight. Everyone loves my dog, and wants me to bring her along when I visit.
Good luck in your search. I never had small dogs, and now I can not imagine going through life without one!!!!

If I were you i would go for a minature schnauzer. they dont shed so theyre good for people with allergies and they are small enough to carry if you need to but not tiny like a chi. if you want a low maintinence pup get an older one. Maybe nearly trained so they dont take up as much time.
Dogs are a commitment. Dont take them lightly. Think of the dog as a child. He relies on you to help him until hes gone
Hope this helps,

I have a miniature poodle, and two shi-poos and and they are all easy to take care of, but as an answerer has already posted, you must train them when they are young. Dogs just don't 'know' what is right or wrong, or where to go to the toilet - this must be taught - just as they must be taught the rules of the house.
But besides all this, my three little dogs took to my training fast, and I have little problems with any of them....

No dog is "easy" to take care of. ESPECIALLY a puppy. My advice to you is get like a hampster or something if you are looking for "Easy", because people who go into dog ownership thinking that it will be easy, usually end up thowing their dog into the pound because they can't train it or take care of it.

I know poodles sometimes have a bad reputation but they are so smart and easy to train. I just got a new toy poodle. They are good with kids if they are raised around them, easy to housebreak. You do have to have them groomed but no shedding makes it work it.
