Our chihuahua is nearly his 2nd birthday and is not fixed. When we got him, we had decided that we might breed him because he was such an excellent dog. This may not have been the brightest idea. About 6 months ago, he started marking things inside the house, barking at every person he saw (he had been socialized constantly growing up), and growling at me when I got too close.

I know there are behavioral issues here that we need to work with (he's never been to classes). However, besides the physical benefits of being neutered, how will getting a 2 year old dog fixed now affect any of the above behavior?

Will it help tame the agressiveness? Will it stop him from marking everything in sight when we aren't looking? He's a very intelligent dog and can be trained, but are there some things that just never go away?

Yes, you can get him fixed, and it is highly recommended not only for his health but to stop pregnancies of unspayed dogs. With neuturing you can see a decrease or elimination in "riding" objects, marking territory, territorial aggression, and eliminates uncomfortable sexual tensions.

If you are going to get him neutured, you should also consider going to obedience classes. There is no reason why he can't be trained! Everything can be fixed, and I have to admit, that being a follower of the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan proves that. Check out his show, or website for clips if you want to see his suggestions on stoping barking at all noises/animals/people/etc.

Neutering him may calm him down and may affect his behavior somewhat. It will cause him to tone down the marking, but he probably will not stop altogether.

Your best bet is to neuter him and then try to get him into an obedience training class to work on his socialization and behavioral issues.
