Could be food allergies. A change in diet should take care of that. But it could also be yeast. My dog did the same thing, and smelled terrible. My vet said it was the yeast in her ears and skin. She told me to use Selsun Blue Medicated Shampoo. She also gave me medication to put in her ears to get rid of the yeast. The dog wouldn't let me get more than a drop or two of the drops, so I never really used the drops. It was just the shampoo that took care of the yeast. That was 2 months ago, and it didn't take long for that horrible smell to go away. I bathed her about every 10 days-14 days. Once the smell went away, I bathe her once month now. Vet visit yesterday for other reasons, and she no longer has yeast in her ears or skin.
You can give your dog Benedryl, which will help with the itching, but will not cure anything. My dog is a small dog (15 lbs) and the vet said I could give her 1 children's Benedryl twice a day (morning and evening). It made her drowsy, but helped with the itching.
If it is fleas, it may also be the eggs/larva she is allergic to. Get Frontline from the vet. That will get rid of that problem.

Is she doing it just during certain times of the year like someone that has seasonal allergies would? Does she chew on the pads of her paws? If so, that sounds like my dogs problem with seasonal allergies. If not, and she only has the problem when fleas are out then it may just be that. Have you changed dog foods lately? She may have food allergies. It's expensive but you can have an allergy test done by the vet.

Had the same problem w/ dog we got, was also told allergic to fleas...some to find out she just needed more running time,,,she was fine after we took her out and about more and let her run on the beach etc...if you are in a city amybe take her to the dog park, they have a blast there.
We also started putting a small amount of olive oil in her food...that seemed to help too...!!!! Good luck.

We have a dog that has allergies and
exzema and she does the same thing.
I give her a dropperful of children's benedril
everyday. It works. Buy generic off the shelf.
She is a very small dog, so adjust accordingly.
When I bathe her, I rub baking soda on her
really good after washing, then rinse very well.
Hope This Helped

have your vet check your animal for red mange mites, invisible to the eye but will drive your dog crazy from then very intence itching.Another name for it is sarcoptic mange, can appear on the animals skin as very tiny red spots or bumps, but are treatable with the proper medication.Be careful, the mites dont hop or fly but can be transmited to humans by touching the animals infected areas.
The vet should take a few skin scapings to determine if your animal is infected..There is a medication that can be purchased thru the internet that is very effective from Happy Jack.com/mange treatment

I have a dog that has many special needs. She is a maltese and is epilleptic. She also used to chew at her feet constantly. We were told to switch her to a dog food that has "NO" ANIMAL BY-PRODUCTS in it. Nutro is one. She has had no problems since. Maybe this could help.

It could be food allergies.
The foods at http://www.frrco.com/121668 are made to be non-allergic, and you fee less of it so it really winds up not costing that much more than store carried brands.
Shipping is free to your door as well. I feed and recommend these foods.
