I got a three month old american staff terrier ( sorry i dont spell to good) last thursday from animal welfare. I am worried that he may be sick. All he is doing is sleeping and sleeping bearly playing at all he just lays around no interrest at all. He was throwing up and had diahreha quite bad, also a runny nose with green/yellow snot and his eyes were like draing a mucos.(sp) so i took him to the vet at the A/W but he was not there so a vet tech seen us. They gave us meds for kennel cough and worms. Its been about three days now and he is still just laying around sleeping. He doesnt want to eat nor drink just sleep. He might play for 5min then he is done. he wants to lay back down. Should i take him back to the vet?

YES! Your dog most likely has Parvo. Parvo is a potentially deadly stomach virus. It makes your dog unable to properly digest any food or water (aka--the dog does not get any nutrients, proteins, or hydration from what it consumes). Essentially, a dog that goes untreated will starve to death. It's very common in pounds. My dog had Parvo when we got her. The treatment is VERY expensive (it cost us just under $500). Go in and ask for a Parvo test TODAY.

After you take your dog in, he should be kept for at least 24 hours at the vet. While he's there, use bleach to clean any spots where the dog has had diarrhea or thrown up. The virus can remain on a surface for 6 months, I believe. If he threw up or went potty on any of your clothes (that can't be bleached), put them in the sun for about 2 days. Direct sunlight kills the virus. Also, when the dog returns home, get pedialyte or some other form of infused water (you know, like what Gatorade has in it, just not Gatorade). Make your dog drink that instead of regular water to replenish lost vitamins more quickly for at least 2 weeks.

Also, if you have any other pets or have come in contact with any other animals, have them tested. If the virus isn't treated early enough, your puppy, or any dog you or your dog may have infected, might die. Don't forget to THOROUGHLY clean everywhere your dog has been!

I'm sorry about your puppy. I know how hard it was when my dog had Parvo.

Three month old? thats a baby.... a really young baby. he probably doesnt have a lot of fur, so keep him warm. He may be homesick after all, you just had him for one week. He also maybe sick. and when you are sick you dont feel like eating or anything just sleeping. But,Yeah you should go to the vet and have him checked up. It is very likely that i am wrong. Im not a vet. Take him to the vet. Good luck.

Yes, I think you should take him back to the vet. Have the vet run some test on him and see if they can pinpoint exactly what's going on. A vet tech is not a doctor, and shouldn't try to diagnose a problem. Hopefully, the vet tech, did not make a mistake and give you the wrong medication. Hopefully the vet will be able to find out what the problem is, and treat it. I hope your poor little guy feels better soon. Good Luck!

Yes! Take him back in. If it was just worms and kennel cough, he'd be feeling much better by now! Hate to say it, but it sounds like Parvo. If you just got him, contact animal welfare. They may help you with expenses, or have a vet on staff that can take care of him. Good luck!

Yes take him back it does sound like he has parvo so have them do a test for parvo. Also if u have young children keep them away for the time being till u really no whats going on. Parvo is very fatal and can be treated with antibiotics. Good luck and I wish u the best.

The laying and sleeping shouldn't alarm you. They can't play long at that age, BUT should show some spark and nosey-ness when they are awake. Meds would also make them sleepy.

The mucous and other bodily fluids are definitely the area of concern. Good luck!

Yes, take him back to the vet. Because you just got him, animal welfare may actually have him vetted for you. Sounds like it could be parvo...which is fatal if left untreated, and can be fatal if treated to late.

The puppy needs to go to a vet. Thats the only way you'll know what's wrong and can get the help to get the puppy well. They are great dogs. I have one.
