Cause I'm going to be at school for a pretty long period and well I don't want my chi to suffer from separation anxiety, so I'm asking should I get a crate, so the puppy will be confined in a space with toys and stuff, or should I get a doggy pen where he will have room to roam around and do stuff? I would actually prefer getting a doggy pen because he will have room and it will be cheaper, but I want to get a crate so that he has no chance of getting out because if they fall and aren't under supervision they can die (they are so fragile!) but then there isn't really a lot of room, is there? ok well thanks for your time and consideration...

I have been taking my dog to the same place to get a bath for years. They do a wonderful job. My question is, I have NEVER thought to tip them. If the fee is $20.00, I pay $20 and leave. With a hair cut, of course I would give a nice tip, but for the dog groomer?

Is it common to tip these kinds of places? I want to start if that's the case. thanks.

Okay, most of us know that all dogs were created from inbreeding and crossing breeds way back when. I'm wondering who and how it is decided which dogs go on to become AKC recognized dogs as opposed to a mutt, because in a real sense, all dogs are mutts? Such as many of the new designer dogs that people are making. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before one of them gets the label "pure bred" and becomes a recognized breed by the AKC. Who sets the standards? How do they make this decision?

Hope this question makes sense.

Ok, when we got Kiser (lab mix, stray - about 10 months old maybe) she seemed to adapt to our home and family with ease. She was friendly, quiet and had very few accidents in the house. I never noticed her having an accident unless we went to0 long between letting her out. Anyway, then one evening I got sick and went to bed early. DH, who brought this dog home but is clueless to pet care, didn't take her out. In his defense, she would go to the door and sit no barking or anything but STILL!!! So, I got up the next morning and found four puddles of pee and three piles of dog poop in a line from the foyer through the living and dining rooms. I cleaned it all up with vinegar and water, tongue lashed DH and went on. Since then she has had an issue with pottying in those rooms. No matter how often I took her out, how much excercise I gave her, etc.. She kept right on leaving deposits! Just those rooms though. Then she started crawling under DD's bed and pooping. Just her bed, no one else's.

I have a 10 week old cockapoo who continues to bite and have behavior problems after 3 weeks of using various behavior techniques. First I tried a firm "no" and rubbed the roof of his mouth. After several days of no success, I continued with a firm "no" and ignored him. After several days of that with no success, I tried yelping after every bite and then ignoring the pup. When that made no change, I would yelp after a bite and grab pup by the scruff of the neck and give a gentle shake. I would then walk away and ignore pup for 5 minutes. Now, I am using the yelp technique and delivering a low growl with eye contact. Pup only growls back and continues to bite! I am at a total loss and think I need to consult a behaviorist. Can anyone help me?

Will he be fine in his new home or will he have already only developed attachment to me? He has only been with me for 4 days? He’ll be 3 months on Jan 19th. That would be the worst thing in the world to me if he ended up having social problems because I took him in and realized it's just not the time for me to be looking after this little amazing guy.
I just don’t feel ready – I have my own issues and I just started crying over it. I feel so horrible and I don’t know what to do. The breeder won’t take him back and I’m stuck with all these over whelming emotions. My friend thinks it’s because my old dog died and I thought he’d be like him. But it’s not that at all. I just don’t think I’m a dog person anymore. I just don’t feel it’s the right time for me. I think the little guy is amazingly cute but it’s not time, and I don’t think I should keep the pup just on the soul reason that he’s cute if I’m not feeling everything else.

My 7 and a half month old female pug and 2 year old male pug have mated. They just did it this week so I am not sure if it has taken but I want to prepare for it just incase. They both have perfect health back grounds and bread from show dogs, but this is Maggie's first heat and she is so young I am worried what this will do to her physically and if she will be ok.
I called the vet and they said it was fine, just to feed her good food but I need more information. I need to know when to take her to the vet for a check up and what to ask. I need to know what food to feed her and what to do when she delivers. I need to know how to brake the sac if she cannot and what to do if she cannot break the cord. How will I tell if she needs a c-section? As you can tell I am scared. We have been keeping them apart but he got her while they were eating and once they were stuck it was too late.
If anyone could help it would be more than appriciated!! Thank you so much!

I have an 8 month old Jack Russell Terrier and got her when she was 10 weeks old. She has always been very submissive and scared of EVERYTHING! If she sees another dog, she will bark and growel like she is acting tough but then run away from it with her tail between her legs. If there is someone she doesn't know, she will not go near them and run by me to "hide". Only she will go by them if they "ignore" her and such. She also, will pee a little when you reach down too fast to pet her or pick her up. We do have another dog and she is just fine around her and will be rambucious as usual playing with her. With my boyfriend and I she is just fine but most other people she is afraid of. We don't hit her or abuse her in any way but her behavior is funny. She is a friendly dog and loves to be around people and kids but never understood why she is so submissive and timid.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm CONSIDERING getting a GSD puppy in a couple of months. I have researched the GSD fairly well but I need a few people with experience of owning a GSD to help with a few questions (or even if you don't own one, that's fine).

1) As we have 3 kittens (9 weeks, 12 weeks and 9 months), any dog we need MUST be able to get along with cats (hency why we don't just adopt a GSD). So, are GSDs generally good with cats?
2) I know a young pup only needs around 20 mins exercise a day but how much PLAY TIME does a PUP need (not incl. walks) Also, exactly how much exercise does an adult GSD need?
3) I know they have a double coat, but how much do they SHED and how much grooming do they need (and for how long)?
4) I need a dog that is fairly easy to housebreak, generally how long does it take to housebreak a GSD pup?
5) I would like a dog that is fairly easy to train (obedience wise). That said, are they smart when it comes to obedience (sit, come, potty etc.)?

More questions to come =D

She has had an MRI and neuro testing done with no obvious abnormalities evident. The dog can still run but is limited to some degree. She walks with her back legs held out wide. Does anyone know what this may be and are there any spinal or gait issues for whippets as they age. The dog is about 12 years old.

there is an abandoned puppy that a male took in yesterday and told them to put it to sleep because he couldnt be bothered anymore with it. The puppy has patches all over her skin and obviously has some sort of skin disease, she is also very very timid. The vet has not put her to sleep and is going to do some tests on her to see what is what. She is so beautiful and I myself know that I am going to lose my own dog sometime in the future as she has cancer.. I am tempted but there problem is she is a pit bull crossed with something else (dont know what) Another problem is that my family are flying out on holidays in 3 weeks time and wont be back til min Feb.. My dear friend is coming to stay with my dog and look after her, give her meds etc. My friend loves my dog as much as I do but would it be fair for me to get this other dog (after her medical etc) and leave them both with her. Other thing is I am unsure about pitbulls are they dangerous. I am not a breeder and we do have children....

My 5 month old Shih Tzu, Miracle, had a realy cute coat when I part her down the back, then brush it sideways...Right after I finnish brushing her, she shakes and it all goes back to normal...How can I keep my dog's fur as a show-coat? I mean, like the long haired ones on the AKC, her hair is almost as long as that and I want to groom her straight out and keep her that way...I have hairspray and hair cement, are thoose safe for the dog? If not, what can I use?
