Does you question say point 5 inches or 5 inches? Either way, the dog has worms and needs to see a vet. Worms easily dx at times without a fecal exam:tapeworms and roundworms
Tapeworm are in segments and each segment is a sac that holds thousands of microscopic eggs. The dog get these from fleas (unless he eats rabbits or mice or rats). You will often see these sacs stuck to the rear end, tail or hind quarters or even stuck to the stool.
Roundworms are typically not found in adult dogs, but almost always in puppies and kittens, as they get them from the milk of their Mom. Otherwise, roundworms are transmitted through infected soiled areas where the microscopic eggs are present and the dog may pick the eggs up on his paws, then clean his paws, ingesting the eggs (for example).
Both are treatable with the proper medication, but tapeworms are not covered in OTC general dewormers. The best solution is to see the vet, find out what kind of worms he has and get the proper dose and proper medication. You need to keep the environment clean and sanitary and if these are tapeworms, you should keep a flea preventative on your pet during active flea 'season' (or year-round).
Hookworms and whipworms aren't generally seen in infested dogs. Their eggs are also microscopic and can only be seen by do a fecal float with a fresh stool sample. These are both treatable, but it would be best, with hookworms, to keep your pet on heartworm preventative year-round like Interceptor that prevents infestation of intestinal parasites. Hookworms can live in the environment for many, many years, that's why the HW preventative is best year-round.

the tapeworm, is transmitted to dogs and cats that ingest fleas (fleas think tapeworm eggs are real tasty!) or that hunt and eat wildlife or rodents infested with tapeworms or fleas. If you were to see an entire tapeworm you would notice that they are arranged with a small head at one end and many tiny brick-like repeating segments making up the rest of the worm. There are generally two types that infest dogs and cats; tapeworms can reach 4 to 6 inches in length within the intestine. It is the last segments in the chain that are released from the worm that can be seen in the dog or cats' stool or as in these photos, attached to the fur under the pet's tail. An entire tapeworm may have 90 segments! Many cases are diagnosed simply by seeing these tiny terminal segments attached to the pet's fur around the anus or under the tail; they even move around a bit shortly after they are passed and before they dry up and look like little grains of rice or confetti. These segments of the tapeworm contain the eggs. Tapeworms cannot be killed by the typical generic, over-the-counter wormers; see the veterinarian for prescription-only treatment that really works. Don't waste your time or money on non-prescription tape worm medications... they don't work very well. The below website will give you description af all the worms a dog can get, but your dog has tapeworms. Yes it can give the worms to your other dog.

It sounds like a tape worm, but tape worms are usually smaller than 5 inches when they come out. So it might also be a roundworm, though roundworms live in the stomach, not the intestines. Either way, you should take your dog to the vet with a stool sample so they can determine what kind of worm it is, and what medication to give him.

It sounds like tapeworms.
Need to take the dog to the vet for a fecal test. If no worms are shown in the test, than it's tapeworm for sure.
Yes you read it right! Tapeworm doesn't show in a fecal test, the only time you know a dog is infested with it, it's when it's pooped out and/or crawls out the rectum. A prescription dewormer called Droncit, will rid of your dog tapeworms. Another one called Drontal Plus, will rid of all types of worms.
Also, just to clarify it, tapeworm is one only, it can grow 6+ feet long. What you see in the poop and/or crawling out of the rectum, are segments of it.
Along with the dewormer, you need to have your house professionally sprayed for flea, and have your dog on flea prevention, to avoid any ulterior infestation.

did it look like a piece of rice? If so then it is tapeworms and they get them from fleas. If it looked like spaghetti then it was roundworm. Take a sample of the stool to your vet and have the intestinal parasites identified correctly so they can get your dog a dewormer

If the worm was flat it was a tapeworm. If it looked like spaghetti, it was a round worm. Either way, you need veterinary intervention. Make an appt.

Sounds like round worms. Your dog might also vomit these worms and it makes him/ her feel like crap. Tomorrow, you better see to it that your dog gets wormed. I wouldn't wait on it.
