Hi! Which dog food is better, Nutro or Royal Canin for my 6 month old shih tzu puppy? Thanks for any input!

it depends. Both are quite ok. Royal canin formulated the diet just for shih tzu. From what I read, it supposed to prevent the breed genetic problems in the later stages. like cloudy eyes. It also claims to improve the coat.

But seriously, not all shih tzu can take royal canin, because some are allergic to chicken. I also don't like the corn ingredient. (allergen)

As for nutro, it's cheaper and good. But I don't like the wheat ingredient (allergen)

What other brands can you get from your usual pet shop? Do they have canine caviar, evolve, timberwolf or wellness, etc?

I use Nutro.I have Lab/English Mastiff mix dogs(same mix used to make the Newfinland) There's different formula's of Nutro specific to the needs of different breeds.compare Royal Canin vs. Nutro.

I use Royal Canin and feel it's the best. That being said, my vets says there are many good foods available. The thing I like about Royal Canin, is all of the ingredients are of a quality that would pass human consumption standards.

I wouldn't feed a single one of these foods. PetCo has some GOOD foods: Halo, Solid Gold, Castor & Pollux Organix, Castor & Pollux Ultramix, Wellness Super5mix, Blue Buffalo, and Natural Balance, and Pinnacle. If you are looking for a cheaper food, PetCo has Avoderm and Diamond. Anything else they carry aside from these brands is not worth feeding. They do have Nutro Ultra, but I wouldn't trust any Nutro product.

Both are good, it will depend on which food your dog does better on. Pick one, start with it and if you don't like the results, wean her onto the other. I'd start with the Royal Canin, but that's my personal preference. I had dogs do fine on Nutro as well.

Nutro Ultra formula.

Artemis, Wellness, Wysong, Verus, Canine Caviar, and Merrick are also very good brands to look into.

I think the Royal Canin is a better food simply because of the ingredients.

Any PREMIUM diet such as the ones you speak of are very good. Always check the label for REAL MEAT as the first ingredient such as chicken, lamb and the like. Not by-products or corn although these are ok as other ingredients

Nutro, it's the best, no questions about it!

I would most definatly ask you vet and compare. If he says both are just fine go by your instinc and look for review and compare by price. I hope I helped. Thanks!
