Cause I'm going to be at school for a pretty long period and well I don't want my chi to suffer from separation anxiety, so I'm asking should I get a crate, so the puppy will be confined in a space with toys and stuff, or should I get a doggy pen where he will have room to roam around and do stuff? I would actually prefer getting a doggy pen because he will have room and it will be cheaper, but I want to get a crate so that he has no chance of getting out because if they fall and aren't under supervision they can die (they are so fragile!) but then there isn't really a lot of room, is there? ok well thanks for your time and consideration...

The crate is a much more secure feeling for your chi. It allows her to feel protected on 3 sides (if you can't see in she thinks you can't get in therefore she doesn't feel nervous always having to protect herself on all sides). The pen is great for a baby, but not for a dog. Dogs are den animals. Please do not leave your animal confined for more than 3-4 hours at a time. If you have school, make sure you come home at lunch to walk the dog or ask someone in your family to walk the dog, or hire a dog walker for the middle of the day.

Your chi would do best in a small size plastic crate. You need to get one big enough for him to stand up, sit, and turn around in.

Place some soft bedding in there and some toys.

A crate is better than a pen, especially for toy breeds. The crate offers more enclosure and will make him feel safer and he'll fell more protected.
You can also cover the crate with a light weight blanket to block out light somewhat, if he cries or barks a lot while you are gone. The blanket seems to add the extra security and they settle in better.

Good luck!

even though they are small...they still like to have that extra room....so a puppy play pen is the best idea, just make sure it has a top...so if it does decide to climb it wont be able to get out....but what ever you decide make sure it has plenty of water and toys and make even a handful of puppy dry biscuits just in case it gets a bit snackish....for the first couple of days it may cry or wine but just ignore it and it will soon over come it....if you are worried about it getting lonely leave a radio on softly, because strangley enough it keeps than company...if you are going to leave the pen outside make sure the is shade....even just a small cushion house.....try these3 things and eventually you puppy will get into your routine...but remember when you get home to play with it lots!!!!!......... a plastic crate can cost anywhere from $20 - $400....here is a grate web site....

If you really want to get a doggy pen and it is safe to go outside etc. find one with a top or get someone to one on it for you.

I have a doggy crate as well as a pen. I use the crate for short stays and the pen for longer ones.

When I go to work I put my 2 month puppy in a crate. So far the only thing she has done is pee. Once they get house break they can stay out, put it takes a while to get them to understand that they can't go inside, they have a longer spanned of holding it than humans do. My old dog could stay in the house from 7am until 9pm. Not often that she had to stay that long but, they learn in time. I'm going through house training a new puppy and so far she is doing great. good luck..
