Crate training a dog is recommended by just about any animal expert, I know. But when we got our dog (large, 85 pounds, spayed female), she was so easy to potty-train that we didn't crate train her (which was our first mistake). Now my partner and I are beginning to work full time (we got her whilst in college, our second mistake) and we find we must leave her alone during the day (we are gone 8-5). The trouble is, she's 2 years old now, and she's simply enormous, and doesn't fit in any of the crates available at our local pet stores! Well, she fits, but I'm afraid it will be too small for her, because she can't sprawl out like she could when she was a puppy. She doesn't like the change in routine and has begun to be destructive when we leave her alone, something she didn't do when we were home more often because we were in school. Will she be okay in the small-ish crate? Can we make her more happy at home without the crate? Should we leave her outside? Or confine her to one room?

What do you do with the pups that you know aren't going to be show quality? For example, you can just tell that their coat, or size, or skull shape isn't going to be right.

A friend of mine currently works for a dog groomer. In five years, not a single person has come in requesting a breed-specific cut. Everyone just wants the dog buzzed.

It got me wondering. Of all you folks who have purebred dogs and DO NOT show them, how many of you maintain the cut the dog is "supposed" to have according to AKC?

I'd look on dictionary.com, but it won't come up, but.... When a dog is dry heaving, what does that mean, what is it that they're doing? I know it's not a good thing and just the words "dry heaving" sounds like what my husky has been doing every now and then, but I could never figure out what it was called...

Our beagle is in heat. She got out of the house and was gone all day. I am just wondering is there a way to tell if she was mated while she was out. Today would be her 8th day in heat. Thanks

I've read that Min Pins are for experieced dog owners only etc. What about them is so hard to handle? I have one and while she is very hyper, she is not that difficult at all. Anyone else have experience with Min Pins, please share?!

My only problem with mine is that she is terribly terribly greedy. If I am roasting meat in the oven, she will stand in front of the oven crying and whimpering for the meat.

I found a poor chap straying in a village and although he seems to belong to someone, he appears to be terribly neglected. His backlegs are weak, he has an old injury and limps. He seems to be very old.
I am thinking of "borrowing" him and finding him a good home. I can't see how the owners can care for him. He is in a terrible state. And as they let him stray anyway, they seem like the sort of people who don't care if he gets run over or causes an accident.
I would be grateful for some comments on this.
It makes my heart bleed to see a dog in such a state. The RSPCA in this area doesn't do much.

Does a dog know when your sad? If they do know when your sad, how do they know and how can they tell? I have a 5 year old female West Highland White Terrier and she came up to me when I was sad and started licking me, had me rub and belly, and rubbed herself up against my legs.

I've been hearing that if you get a puppy neutered he will act better and not pee all over the house, lately my pug has been really being bad. Will this help?

I have a labrador retriever and while I was outside, she got into some chocolate that was hidden in my room. It was a tube of the small reese cups. I'm guessing there must have been at least 15 of them. She ate the whole thing, including the plastic. Its been about 2 hours and she doesn't seem to be sick...I'm scared that it might kill her? She's 10 years old...and has eaten all sorts of things including a pack of tea light candles..and has never bothered her.

I bought a bed type thing from costco that fits perfectly into her dog house, however when I wake up in the morning I find it on the lawn will holes in it. I know she has been chewing on it because there is cotton on her snout. She does not like sleeping inside the house, so to make her more comfortable I bought the bed. Any ideas to keep her from chewing up her bed?
