Papillon or King Charles Spaniel

Every Chihuahua that my family or relatives have ever owned were never calm, they barked a lot and sometimes its impossible to get them to stop. They bark just because they're so protective which is great, they are lovable and cute but NOT calm. Depending on how small you really want them a Shih Tzu may be the next best thing in regards to the size Chihuahuas are. I've lived w/ at least 4 different Shih Tzus and each hardly barked unless a new vistor would enter and they were fairly easy to calm down. I did have to brush them every other day, they may look like Gizmos but you just fall in love w/ them. Besides a Shih Tzu I would recommend a beagle, Good luck in your search!

I've had two good small dogs - a shih tzu and a papillon. The shih-tzu was mostly calm unless we had a visitor or we just came home. The papillon isn't calm, to say the least. She does sit on my lap a good deal, just sleeping, but she is very hyper when she wants to play or is letting me know she wants something like a treat.

Often, calm AND small don't fit in the same catagory. Beagles and Hounds might be something you want to look into, but they aren't always calm and aren't always small. Of look into adopting an older dog from a shelter. Might be calmer than a young, full of life dog.

I myself, have 2 small dogs (weenie dogs). I asked the same question to my vet. She suggested taking them for a walk every night or every other night for 30 mins to an hour to give them time to unwind from being kept up all day in or outdoors. You should see a difference in the way your dog acts immediately after. Such as, the dog being more relaxed or even taking a nap right after. Plus its great exercise for both of you.

If you don't have time to do that, then just have a full play hour (or 30 mins) when you get home.

Pugs. I don't like them, but they are good, quiet and small.

Basset Hounds are very nice and small and well behaved. And Bulldogs, too.

Edit: Don't listen to anyone who tells you any dog with the word "Terrier" in it is calm. Terriers are typically active, Rat Terriers are little balls of energy who would love to play fetch with you. All. Day. Long. No rest for them.

A lot of people are saying CHihuahua, too. They do not tend to be calm dogs.

Get a Bulldog, pug or a lazy ol' hound and you will love him. =)

All dogs have different personalities. You can't be 100% sure your dog will be calm because all dogs are different, but if I had to pick your best bet will be a maltipoo that is a poodle/maltese. They are very calm(well most of them).
