Congrats on knowing what you are going to do. The best thing I can tell you is get some real experience before going to vet school. (if you can) I worked as a vet tech in Stillwater , home of Oklahoma State University (one of the best-in my opinion-vet schools in the country) and you would be suprised how many people get into and out of vet school with out any experience. Not that they dont turn out good vets, it just comes as a shock when you dont get to run the tests you want, when you want, like you do in vet school. So get some practice or at least hang around a clinic (cleaning, walking dogs, whatever) to see what it is really like in the vet clinic. Texas A&M is also a great school for vets. One of my friends went there. It is 2nd to OSU in my opinion :) but a very good school to go to. Good luck being an AGGIE.

The vet tech thing is a waste of your time. Focus on biology courses, chemistry courses and math courses. The vet tech program wont speed up your ability to go to vet school. Look up the prereqs, like biochem, calculus, stats, organic etc and start getting these out of the way. You might want to look into getting a bs in biology. Many vets get a bs in animal science but a bs in biology is much more useful as a backup plan and looks better on a resume. As far as going to be a vet, make sure it is something you love as the amount of money you make versus how much time and effort you put into vet school make it hardly worth it. But then most vets/vet students (at least the ones i know are kinda crazy and dont seem to mind making crappy wages.. You could make just as much or more money with a masters and pay a lot less for school and living while in school, take less exams (im talking about all the licensing crap), and more enjoyable over the long run.
As far as how long it takes, anywhere from 5-10 years altogether depending on what route you go. On of the best vet schools is Ross in st Kitts. Not only is it one of the easiest vet schools to get into but in St Kitts you can drink and drive, the girls get topless on the weekends, you dont need a seatbelt and you can go swimming whenever you want and even study sea turtles. By the way I am not joking this is all true.

You need 4 years of college- science and math based courses with excellent grades. Also lots of experience working in a vet clinic- you need some large and some small animal experience. Also excellent grade on the GRE exam. Volunteer work. And a great entrance interview. It is more competeive than human medical school since there are so few schools in the country. Good luck hope you make it in.

It easily relies upon on the vet, the adventure and the practice. i comprehend my vet makes enormously good money even with the undeniable fact that it took him awhile to get there. He reported the first 10-15 years were fantastically demanding b/c he cared so deeply about the animals 0.5 the time if the owner couldn't have the funds for the upkeep or the bill he's take the animal off of the proprietors hand particularly in the adventure that they wanted him to. i imagine he reported at the same time as he first began on his own he wound up with 12 horse 4 cows some goats and about 6 canine...... all b/c the orginal proprietors would have particularly surrendered them than pay the expenditures. i comprehend one vet that still makes good money, yet he nevertheless takes in animals at the same time as human beings camn't affor dhis expenditures. it truly is sweet that you want to do ti for the affection of the animals and in no way the money. purely be prepared no longer to make a good purchase the first few years using paying pupil loans and the entire new vet element that looks to electrify virtually all vets .... the animal for the bill lol

It's usually 8 years, but beware! Vets require almost the same amount of school as an MD, but don't make anything close to the same amount of money. You'll be spending many years paying off your school loans, unless you open your own clinic and have a lot of success.
Good luck!
