I'd look on dictionary.com, but it won't come up, but.... When a dog is dry heaving, what does that mean, what is it that they're doing? I know it's not a good thing and just the words "dry heaving" sounds like what my husky has been doing every now and then, but I could never figure out what it was called...

Yeah, that's what he's been doing... He doesn't do it as often now, but when he was a little younger (he's only 9 months right now) he would do it a lot. Kinda like a sucking noise, right? Like sucking in and out, and then he'd gag... Yeah, that's it... =/

People dry heave, too. Trust me, been there, done that.

Dry heave is when your stomach wants to puke and you try, but all you end up doing is gagging. Sometimes maybe some wonderful stomach acid comes up, but not necessarily.

Not fun. Sorry your doggie is having problems with this. Don't know what to tell you to make it stop.

Dry heaving , well it brings back plenty of party nights that I dont care to remember but yes it could be a little serious.
Alot of dogs will eat grass and if you see your dog eating grass this is usually a good sign that the animal has a upset stomache. But alot of times this can also be a form of allergies or even some sort of siezure, what I would do is speak with your vet explain the symptoms are closely as you can, it could be something as simple as a allergic reaction to some of the ingredients in the dog food that you are feeding him to something a little more serious , either way every animal is individual and this would be something that would be good to appraoch your vet with so that you and he may come up with the best conclusion ! Good Luck !

Have you ever felt the need to vomit but it just doesn't come up? You may feel it coming, your stomach contracts, you'll force your neck forward and your mouth open just as it you were actually vomitting, except nothing comes up. This is dry heaving. Sometimes enough dry heaving eventually leads to actual vomitting.

Plenty of pets get it from eating plants they shouldn't have - cat's do it a lot when they look like they are about to vomit up a hairball.

I suggest you phone your dogs vet and say that you have been told your dog is dry heaving and ask them what it is.
If you phone the night time staff you seem to get a friendlier and more detailed response.

I know this because I have phone the vets to ask questions about my dogs health. These people are always willing to give free advice to concerned owners.

Dry heaving (whether you're talking about a dog, a person, or any other type of animal), is when you are gagging or retching as if you were going to vomit, but no actual vomit comes up.
