Cats - September 2007

One of my five cats is about 6 to 7 years old now. She used to have a shiny grey coat and had very fat glands under her belly area. My others cats were healthy too. Apart from a bout of cat flu from which they all recovered thankfully.

Now though, all the cats are healthy still, apart from the grey cat. Her coat is no longer shiny, its dull. Her hair is corse and no longer smooth, she has lost all that fat and appears to be getting thinnner and she appears to be loosing hair towards the back of her body..in clumps.

She is eating and drinking. Pooping normally and does not seem in distress.

I thought maybe it was the result of flea problems which they were all treated for a while back. But none of the others have this problem.

If she gets any worse I will take her to the vet but does anyone know what this could be? Age? Fleas? Liver/Kidney disease? Cat flu even maybe...??

I would like to break the record for the fattest cat. It is a female about 1.5 years old. I currently give her an unlimited supply of cat food and was thinking about weight gainer or protein powder mixed in with a limited exercise area. Any ideas?

My cat had an accident last week when he jumped of a bench with a wooden skewer in his mouth and unfortunetely the skewer hit the ground before he did and ended up puncturing his spinal cord.
He's on medication and he's getting better every day, however he's having trouble moving his right legs. They are really improving and he can even slowly walk and stand on them (very Wobbly) but i want to know if there's more I could be doing for him like excersises with him.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

My boyfriend and I adopted a kitten with a mutated paw from being put down. We have enough for groceries, rent, and kitty essentials. However, we honestly have no money to spare at the end of the month.

I would never declaw my kitten because its completely inhumane, but we can't afford the softpaws ($20 for being puncture wound free for a month is a lot). What other options are there?

I think he can open the back door and also differentiate between the TOMATO tin being opened and the TUNA tin. Does this make him as smart as a dog?

OK!!!! NOW!!!! We have a cat and he has been overweight since he was like a year old. He's 15 now and I'm wondering what would cause a cat to be that big? He is perfectly healthy. Alot of people tell me it's genetics and some cats are meant to be that big. Anyone ever heard of that? We feed him half a cup a day and it's been like that for years but he doesn't lose weight. We have a big pool area and he plays out there and chases things around but he doesn't lose weight. But he's HEALTHY. I don't get it.

I have three cute 7 month-old kittens that get plenty to eat and drink, but they still try to suck on their momma. Some of them are even bigger than she is. What's up with that?

My cat has been kinda of tired lately, and i've noticed his eyes are always kind of closed. Like, his cat-eyelids are always have way closed on his eyes.

I don't think he's sick because he never coughs or sneezes, or throws up or anything, he just always has kind of red eyes, like his eyes are bothering him, so I think it's allergies, but i'm worried about him. He's a house-cat, and he's probably about 4-8 months old, and it's been like this for about a week now. He's a beautiful little guy. I've seen one question similar to this and it said something about a respiratory problem, but it said that only happens when he gets eye-boogers.

But he doesn't have any eye boogers.

If he does in fact have allergies, should I take him to the vet, or is there anything I can give him. My parents just split up so we're kinda low on money, but i'll get a job and buy him some medicine if he needs it.

I have a 1 year old cat who lives inside/outside. My daughter was playing with him and he put his claws in her. She dropped him and he hit our outside table. He limped that day and was better the next day(with a little limp). But now, he doesn't come down the stairs fast and occasionally, I see a tiny hobble. He still cleans himself, purrs when I scratch/pet him, and plays on his scratching post. Also, when other people hold him, he growls. I checked his arm and when I try to go in depth of feeling it, he reaches around and nips at me. Should I take my cat to the vet(it is expensive like $30-$50)? Or should I just give it time? Thanks for your help!

"I adopted a female cat about 2 mos. ago. She is over one year old and was very sweet and cuddly the first week. She then began biting us when we pet her, and now she will just come up and bite us frequently for no apparent reason. We can just be sitting on the couch and she will come lay by us then start attacking. I have tried spraying and saying "no" firmly but she isn't stopping. She also cries all night long by our closed bedroom door and is tearing up the carpet by the door (us in the bedroom, her out). Again, I ignore it and spray with water once in a while, but it's not working. We also discovered that she has ringworm (which is why she's not allowed in the bedroom). We have her on meds and clean constantly so hopefully thats clearing up. Could these all be linked. Sorry my question is so long, but I'm becoming desperate! Thank you."

One night my cat Ayla did something strange that she's never done before. She came out from the front room while I was sitting on my couch watching TV, and she frooze as soon as she saw me. She just stayed there, and puffed out her tail not taking her eyes off me. I'll admit it, it kind of freaked me out. I thought she was gonna attack me or something XP So, I got up and went to bed since it was very late as it is, and while I walked to my room slowly, Ayla was STILL eyeing me!
Can anyone think WHY she did this? She never did this before since we've had her from 2005. She's also an indoor cat, so, it's not like she came from outside...

they suddenly loose appetite and get a nasty pastel yellow green diearrea that smells like a dead animal. then they get better for about six hours and die. just fall asleep and don't wake up. this one isn't at the diearrea stage yet just no appetite and sleeps a lot.

a new kitten we got has ringworm. we have a 6mo old baby too. i took the kitten to my dad's house and he is treating him. today we found a spot on our other cat! i dont want the baby to get it too. if we took all our cats (we have 3) and quarantined them at my dad's house - how do we get rid of the spores in our house? they can live on surfaces and carpets for months. even if they got rid of it and came back to our house they could possibly get reinfected. how do we disinfect the house?
