a new kitten we got has ringworm. we have a 6mo old baby too. i took the kitten to my dad's house and he is treating him. today we found a spot on our other cat! i dont want the baby to get it too. if we took all our cats (we have 3) and quarantined them at my dad's house - how do we get rid of the spores in our house? they can live on surfaces and carpets for months. even if they got rid of it and came back to our house they could possibly get reinfected. how do we disinfect the house?

I think the spore scare is mostly just that, a scare. One of my cats came down with a patch of ringworm last year, we treated it, and even though he was in constant contact with me, my significant other, and four other cats, only I got ONE spot on my leg where he leaned up against me.
If it was as contagious as they say it is, we'd all have been covered in spots since we never stopped handling him, and the other cats would have gotten it too. As it was, there was just two spots, one on him and one on me.
Do you have a pet pharmacy around by you? Anyone who can compound medications? They can get you a liquid medicine to put on any spots, instead of having you deal with the creams. It gets in good among the fur side of the spot and helps heal it faster.
I didn' t know this till recently, someone from a rescue group told me that's all she uses now, the liquid form.
Myself, we treated me and the cat with Miconazole from WalMart, it's a 4% solution. The cat healed up in a month, completely, and it took about 6 weeks for me. Miconazole is the generic name, if you want the regular name, use Monistat 3. I can guarantee they work and aren't harmful to cats.

You can wash down anything you can with a bleach solution. Rugs should be steam cleaned, and that usually solves the issue. Make sure if your cats sleep in a certain area, that area is cleaned as well. Wash and disinfect the litterboxes, and then refill with fresh litter. Treat your cats as the vet tells you. Ringworm on people is fairly easy to get rid of with antifungal creams. Even Monistat will do the job! Even though this website is about dogs and ringworm, it gives alot of good info. I don't think once treated and you will have much of an issue with it. Here's 2 different websites that might help:

It takes a committed owner to conquer ringworm. Everything that the cat touched that can be disposed of should be, everything else needs to be cleaned. All laundry needs to be washed preferably with bleach and on hot. As far as cleaning the house, you must vacuum everyday (with a vacuum that has a filter) then throw out the bag. You also need to change the filters in the a/c and heater. Try to vacuum the couch and mop the floors often too. This should be done over a course of 6-8 weeks. At the end of the treatment the vacuum should be disposed of too.
The vet should also have some sort of protocol to follow as well. Good luck.

Vets agree that treatment should continue for eight weeks, no matter how much better your pet is doing after only a few weeks. This is important due to the fact that the fungal spores from ringworm can exist for many weeks. Don't forget to treat your home at the same time you are treating your pet. Some believe that ringworm spores can live in your carpet for up to two years. Be sure to thoroughly clean your home. Vacuum your carpet and then change out your bag.

Clean your carpet with a steam cleaner. Lysol every thing. From couch to hard wood floors. And keep the cats out of the house. Take to the vet and get some medicine for them. After you do that keep them out side because more than likely you baby will have it to. Also if the cats start losing there hair take to the vet asap.Clean you carpet and furniture every 2 months to make sure it is gone for good. Also get some spray to kill germs and bacteria.
