The signs are a good idea. Also, bring the cat to the local shelter to have it scanned. Some pets have micro-chips in them with their owner's contact info. BUT don't leave the cat at the shelter...shelters are over-crowded and if no one comes to claim that cat, the it will likely be put down.

Make sure you post signs at the grocery store, nearest gas stations and at the closest vet too. All places an owner may see it. Also check with the vet if they have a microchip reader, they read the back of any found animal for free, to see if the owner can be found.

look in the local paper for lost cats, put up signs and take it to a vet to get it scanned for a micro chip.. if no way to identify it and no one claims him/ her.. keep it! if it isnt doing any hard to you or your belongings.. make sure it has food and water- you can pick up a cheap bag of cat food at any store for a couple bucks and (maybe litter if it is living in your garage).... or you could jsut let it be an outside cat free to roam and jsut make sure it has fresh food and water.. if you want to keep it as an indoor pet you should def get it checked by a vet and spayed/ neutered.... but as an outside pet it sould be alright.. will help keep down the rodent population if you have any and they are generally pretty laid back cool creatures

what you can do is put an ad in the paper saying that you found a missing cat lying in your garage and give them your contact information that way they would know whose cat it is and come by to pick it up.

You can also check with local vets and pet sitters, because they sometimes receive notice of lost pets.

You can also check your local craigslist page (craigslist.com). A lot of people who are missing their pets will post it on there.
